Dryden OPP investigate suspicious note found in local high school 

Dryden OPP is investigating an incident from last week after a list of names was found in a school bathroom.  

In a press release, the Dryden Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police announced that they were contacted by the local high school after a suspicious handwritten note was found in a public bathroom in the school.  

The note contained names of past and present students.  

Lake of the Woods Control Board is prepared for different outcomes as the snow starts to melt

Niagara Falls man arrested in Dryden, faces weapon, drug charges

The Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have an individual in custody following an investigation.

On March 10, 2022, at around 2:30 p.m. officers responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Southworth Township.

Dryden OPP officers and the Dryden Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) located the vehicle and found the individual sleeping inside.

The investigation determined the vehicle was stolen and the individual was placed under arrest.

35-year-old Tyler Rivard of Niagara Falls was charged with the following criminal code offences:

Canada's new electric-vehicle registrations soar in 2021 but still lag behind Europe

More new electric vehicles hit the road in Canada last year than ever before but the growth is nowhere near what is happening in Europe.

Statistics Canada says more than 65,000 new battery-only and plug-in hybrid electric cars were registered in the first nine months of 2021, compared with 38,000 in 2020.

There were also more new electric-vehicle registrations in just nine months last year than in any full year before.

Environment Canada says light showers are a possibility this week

After a particularly cold and snowy winter, we are starting to move into slightly warmer temperatures which means the possibility for light showers. 

According to Environment Canada, we are going to see a system move through the region this week – the type of precipitation? That will be determined by the temperature as we hover around a daytime high of 0 degrees Celsius. 

OPP provides updates on Wabigoon death investigation

The Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has confirmed following a post-mortem examination of 33-year-old Darren Burnard that his cause of death was a homicide and the OPP will be investigating the incident as such. 

Burnard of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation was reported missing by family members on January 12, 2022. His body was discovered on March 7, 2022, in a vacant unit in the Hillcrest Trailer Park in Dryden. 

Police believe there are no concerns for public safety.

Parts of Davis St closed Monday

Motorists may experience delays as the City of Dryden has announced some parts of Davis St will be closed. 

Davis St from Birch Ave to Earl Ave will be closed to vehicular traffic on Monday (March 14, 2022), from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

The closure is to allow crews to complete emergency repairs to the water distribution system.

Homelessness numbers drop in NWO after 2021 study

The Kenora District Services Board says the amount of individuals experiencing homelessness in the Kenora region has dropped in the last four years.

The KDSB’s 2021 Homeless Enumeration Report is a point-in-time, one-day count of homeless individuals in each of the nine municipalities in the Kenora district, who all agreed to share their stories. The survey took place in October of 2021, with results being released late last week.

Ontario to "modernize" science curriculum for students in grades 1-9

Ontario is set to “modernize” the science curriculum for students by introducing a new science and technology curriculum.  

The provincial government announced on March 8, 2022, that they will be introducing a new science and technology curriculum for students in grades 1 to 8, as well, they will introduce a new de-streamed Grade 9 science course.
