Northwestern Ontarians are waking up to the coldest morning the region has seen so far this season.
An extreme cold warning has been issued by Environment Canada and windchill values are nearing the -40 Celcius mark.
Milder temperatures and more moderate wind chills are forecast for tonight, with some relief going into our weekend as Friday's high will hover around -5.
White-tailed deer illegally shot and killed on Laclu property
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is looking for the public’s help with identifying who is responsible for shooting and killing a white-tailed deer in the region.
On November 13, 2022, Conservation Officers were alerted to a kill site of a deer that was shot on private property on the Ostersund Road off Highway 641. It is believed that the deer was shot on November 12, 2022.
The ministry takes this situation very seriously and is looking to identify those responsible.
OPP: LCBO needs security upgrades, should close one day per week
Leadership with the Kenora OPP is continuing to lobby the province to make security changes at northwestern Ontario LCBO locations to better protect employees, officers and those in need of help.
“What we’re looking for across the region - because we all have the same issues whether it be Kenora, Red Lake, Dryden, Sioux Lookout…we’re looking for the LCBO to go to more of a Manitoba model,” explains Inspector and Detachment Commander, Jeff Duggan.
New NDP leader acclaimed; Mamakwa opts to focus on north
A new leader of the Ontario NDP has been acclaimed after Deputy Leader and Kiiwetinoong MPP, Sol Mamakwa, bowed out last week.
On December 2, Mamakwa announced that he would not be pursuing the role as his top priority is to ‘continue being a voice for Kiiwetinoong and First Nations people across Ontario.’
Events held to honour victims of École Polytechnique shooting on 33rd anniversary

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held Tuesday to mark the 33rd anniversary of the École Polytechnique mass shooting, one of a handful of tributes planned throughout the day.
On Dec. 6, 1989, a man motivated by a hatred of feminists shot and killed 14 female students and injured 13 other people at the Montreal engineering school.
Snow plow operator deceased following collision
A 52-year-old snow plow operator is dead after a collision on Highway 102.
On Friday, December 2, 2022 at approximately 9:55 p.m., Thunder Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call of a motor vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer unit and a snowplow on the highway near Sistonen's Corner.
Education workers ratify Province's contract
After 170 days, an agreement has been made between the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the province in regard to labour negotiations.
The Union represents about 55,000 education workers across the province, where 73 per cent of members voted in favour of the province's most recent deal.
The four year deal would see a $1 per hour raise for lowest paid education workers, which adds up to 3.9 per cent annually.
Police request assistance in locating missing man
UPDATE: The male was located safe.
Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking to the public to assist in locating a 51-year-old male.
Larry Bird is described as an aboriginal male with a medium build approximately 5' 11" tall and 200lbs who was last seen on November 30, 2022.
Anyone with information about the missing male is asked to call the Kenora OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or 548-5534.
John Barry Wapioke
November 30, 1960 – November 30, 2022
John Barry Wapioke was born November 30, 1960 and began his journey into the spirit world on November 30, 2022; his 62nd birthday. John will be missed dearly by his siblings, Lorraine, Lorne (Lisa), Earl (Shona), Eleanor, Isabel, Debbie (Jeff) and Patricia; his children Kelly (Troy), Jeannine (Dave), Jenna, John (Nadine), Desiree, Myles, Travis and Michael; his grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. John will also be missed by his Anishnaabeo’maamaayin Viola.
Lorne Clifton
I am greatly saddened to say that Lorne Clifton has passed away November 2, 2022 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora.
But he had a great life he'd worked on the railroad in the 1970's and he'd survived the train wreck 1977 he went from there too being psychiatric nurse at the old McKellar in Thunder Bay for 10 years.
