What’s Open/Closed on Remembrance Day in NWO?
Municipal staff across the region are taking time tomorrow to honour Canada’s veterans, and a number of closures are planned.
The City of Kenora says all municipal facilities and buildings, including the transfer station, will be closed all day. Recycle and garbage pick-up routes are also cancelled for the day. Anyone with after-hours issues is asked to call 807-467-2080.
Remembrance Day in the region
Remembrance Day services are scheduled throughout Northwestern Ontario tomorrow morning.
The Remembrance Day Service in Dryden begins with assembly at the Legion Hall and march to the Cenotaph, with laying of the wreaths and return to the Legion for a light lunch.
Nov. 10 Sports Update
The Kenora Under 18 AAA Thistles have another loss under their belt. They played host to the Winnipeg Bruins, where they fell to a tight game 4-3.
Kenora led the first period 2-1, but that ended quickly when the Bruins scored 37 seconds into the second. Two more goals were added by each team in the third, and it was looking like overtime was on the horizon, but ultimately Winnipeg's Peyton Allard scored with 28 seconds left in regular play.
Kenora will next host a pair against the Parkland Rangers this weekend.
New deal secures major wage increases for Ear Falls mill workers
150 workers at the Ear Falls Sawmill finally have a new 4-year contract.
Unifor Local 324 say they’ve reached a new agreement for over 150 maintenance, production and woodyard employees at the sawmill, after their last deal expired in April.
The contract includes a 36 per cent increase in licensed maintenance wages with top rates reaching $49.99 per hour by May 1, 2025, a 24 per cent increase in production wages reaching $39.49 per hour, double time for overtime on Sundays, a 25 per cent increase in pension contributions and much more.
Dryden business wins $100,000, has major plans to expand
Dryden’s Agritech North has won $100,000 in Canada’s first-ever Indigenous business pitch competition – and after a bumpy first year for the new company, a number of new expansion plans are in the works.
Agritech North works to grow a variety of lettuce, herbs, teas and fruits using a vertical drip-fed hydroponic farming system, producing hundreds of pounds of product year-round in a warehouse using water, opposed to soil.
Two-week closure at Whyte Ave, Albert Street
Dryden drivers are warned of a two-week closure near the Dryden Memorial Arena.
The City of Dryden says the intersection of Whyte Avenue and Albert Street, directly in front of the arena’s entrance, will be closed to all traffic until November 23 as crews continue construction work.
The city notes that access to the arena’s and Safeway’s parking lots will still be made available to traffic.

A toddler is thriving after doctors in the U.S. and Canada used a novel technique to treat her before she was born for a rare genetic disease that caused the deaths of two of her sisters.
Ayla Bashir, a 16-month-old from Ottawa, Ontario, is the first child treated as a fetus for Pompe disease, an inherited and often fatal disorder in which the body fails to make some or all of a crucial protein.
Today, she’s an active, happy girl who has met her developmental milestones, according to her father, Zahid Bashir and mother, Sobia Qureshi.
'War hero of the family': Canadian War Museum acquires three more Victoria Crosses
The story of Pte. James Peter Robertson was well-known in Peter Harris’s family.
During the First World War, the Canadian soldier singlehandedly took out a German machine-gun nest at Passchendaele. He then led his unit to their objective before a shell killed him while he was trying to save a comrade.
Now, Harris is hoping his namesake great-uncle's story will become more widely known by the rest of the country.
Influenza outbreak at Pinecrest, COVID-19 outbreak continues
A second outbreak is being reported at Kenora’s Pinecrest.
Assistant Administrator and Human Resources Manager, Michelle Spencer, says the Northwestern Health Unit has declared an influenza outbreak in Unit #3, with 1 positive resident and 3 residents presenting symptoms.
Visitors are warned that affected residents may only have one designated visitor during their isolation period, which lasts 5 days for influenza – otherwise known as the flu – pending symptom improvement.

The U18 Kenora AAA Thistles are gearing up to host the Winnipeg Bruins tonight. In their last match-up against the Bruins, Kenora fell 6-1. Puck drop tonight is at the Rec Centre at 7:30 p.m.
The St. Thomas Aquinas Saints kick off the NorWOSSA 'A' playoff semi-finals on home court today. Battling it out in Junior and Senior Girls' basketball will be Rainy River and Red Lake. The Saints will take on Pelican Falls for Junior Boys' volleyball. The Senior Boys' will be Atikokan and Red Lake.
