New poppy campaign initiatives seek to modernize the tradition of remembrance

A shift towards environmentally friendly materials and new digital engagement strategies are among new initiatives the Royal Canadian Legion is hoping will breathe fresh life into the 2022 national poppy campaign.

The annual push to honour fallen soldiers officially launched on Friday and is set to run until Remembrance Day, and organizers say they're hopeful the features introduced this year will help re-engage Canadians in the act of paying tribute to veterans both past and present.

'Abhorrent': Bronco families worry Saskatchewan plans to loosen driving requirements

Families of those killed or injured in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash are raising concerns that Saskatchewan's rules for truck driving licences could be loosened as the industry deals with a shortage of drivers. 

The crash killed 16 people and injured 13 others after a bus carrying the junior hockey team collided with a transport truck at a rural intersection on April 6, 2018. 

Rickford details $25 million fund for Indigenous-owned businesses

Members of the provincial government, including Kenora Rainy-River MPP Greg Rickford, are partnering with the Chiefs of Ontario to provide $25 million to Indigenous-owned businesses as they work to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Indigenous communities welcome this funding to help businesses and organizations,” said Ontario Regional Chief, Glen Hare.

89-year-old Mavis donates hand-made hats, mitts to Mishkeegogamang

An 89-year-old Dryden resident worked her hands to the bone this month to donate countless pairs of hand-made mitts, toques and sweaters to youth in Mishkeegogamang First Nation.

“All children matter,” says Mavis Rushak, who says the donation is in honour of Dress Purple Day. “I love knitting for children. I wish I could do more.”

It was a big day for members of the T.A. Saints’ Court Sports teams as Kenora hosted the Rainy River Owls, but the Saints dominated in each match.

In Senior Girls’ Basketball, Emmy Anderson led the way with 13 points as they won 43 to 33. In Junior Girls’ Basketball, it was Maddyn Hughes with 11 points as they won 35 to 26.

In Volleyball action, the Senior Boys took all 3 of their sets, while the Junior Boys won their match 2-0.

The Saints are taking on the Red Lake Rams in Court Sports action today.

Funeral march and service at Olympic Oval for Const. Shaelyn Yang: RCMP

Mounties say a regimental funeral will be held next Wednesday for British Columbia RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang.

The 31-year-old officer was stabbed to death last week in a Metro Vancouver park while she helped a City of Burnaby employee notify a man in a tent that he wasn't allowed to live in the park.

Thirty-seven-year-old Jongwon Ham has been charged with first-degree murder in Yang's death and remains in custody. 

Mounties say the service will be held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, which has the capacity for about 8,000 spectators. 

Onigaming member honoured with Clean Water award

A band member from the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation’s work to protect his community and provide them with safe and clean water is being honoured and recognized by the federal government.

Brian Indian of Onigaming First Nation has been awarded the 2022 National First Nations Water Leadership Award, recognizing his 17 years of service as one of the community’s only certified water operators.

Underpass closed today for road work

The City of Dryden says the Underpass will be closed down to all traffic today, causing delays.

Crews with the City of Dryden will be working on the roadway under the Underpass today, closing it down until 3 p.m.

Oct. 26 Sports Update

The Kenora Under 18 AAA Thistles will be on the road today. They're off to Beausejour to take on the Eastman Selects at Sun Go Centre. Kenora is coming off a 4-1 win against Beausejour last week. The Thistles sit at 2 and 7 for the season.

The Sioux Lookout Bombers are looking for their third straight win tonight as they host the Red Lake Miners in SIJHL action. Bombers sit 4th in the League at 5 and 3, while Red Lake is in 5th with 4-5-and-1.
