Poirier: Council looking at new priorities over 4-year term
Ahead of being sworn into his new position as the ninth Mayor of Kenora – Andrew Poirier says he’s taking a look at Kenora Council’s priorities for the next four years.
The former Manager of Operational Services for the Kenora Catholic District School Board, who has served three terms as a City Councillor in Kenora and won October 24’s election with 64 per cent of the community’s votes, says Council’s direction will include input from every member at the table.
Melillo congratulates new Mayors, Councillors in NWO
Kenora MP Eric Melillo says he’s looking forward to northwestern Ontario’s new Mayors and Councillors once they’re sworn into their positions next month.
“I do want to take the opportunity to congratulate everyone who was elected in Kenora and throughout the region,” said Melillo, in an interview with the Q Morning Show.
“I look forward to working together with everyone to see our region thrive. I want to thank everyone who put their names forward to run. I know it’s no easy task, but it’s an important one. I’m thankful for everyone who stepped up.”
OPP aims to keep public safe on Halloween night
The OPP is reminding the public that youth will be out in full force tonight for Halloween and will be focused on candy – not vehicles or other safety hazards.
Drivers are warned that OPP officers throughout the region will be closely watching for speeding, proper seatbelt use, distracted driving and impaired driving – and drivers are reminded to pay extra attention to the roadways when driving through the community tonight.
Survey suggests 20% of Canadians skipping meals to cut down on food costs
Laurie O'Connor says more people in Saskatoon are struggling to get food for themselves and their families as prices in grocery stores rise out of reach.
"We are definitely seeing an increase and have been noticing that since January," said O’Connor, executive director of the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre.
The majority of respondents in a Canada-wide survey released Monday said they are using coupons or hunting for sales to cope with increasing food costs. Nearly 20 per cent were also reducing meal sizes or skipping meals altogether in order to save money.

A Canadian was among those injured in a crowd surge that killed more than 150 people in Seoul, South Korea, Global Affairs confirmed Sunday, while Korean Canadians said they were shocked by the disaster.
The federal department said Canadian officials are in touch with local authorities to gather more information and provide consular assistance to those affected.
It said it can't release any further information about the person who was hurt, including whether the person was hospitalized or the severity of the injuries, due to privacy considerations.

NDP calls on Ottawa to rethink riding proposal
Members of provincial parliament from across the north are standing together against the federal government’s proposed redistribution of electoral districts in northwestern Ontario.
Ottawa has been looking at the possibility of eliminating certain electoral districts in northwestern Ontario and combining them, including the Kenora district becoming the Kenora – Thunder Bay – Rainy River district.

Colby Wallace has qualified for the OFSAA cross-country championships in Uxbridge on November 5. It’s the first time in over a decade that a cross-country runner from TA is headed to OFSAA.
In Court Sports, the Saints hosted the Red Lake Rams in Basketball and Volleyball action.
The two schools split the day with Red Lake winning in Junior Boys’ Volleyball and Junior Girls’ Basketball, but the Saints’ senior teams took their games.
