First Nation housing, homelessness agreement signed in NWO

Regional organizations are partnering together and committing to build new, affordable housing units in First Nation communities across northwestern Ontario – to help address social and economic barriers in the region – including chronic homelessness.

The Kenora District Services Board, Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board and Grand Council Treaty #3 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to improve housing and education programming across the Treaty #3 territory.

No wrongdoing found in Kenora SIU investigation

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says they’ve terminated an investigation into a broken ankle suffered by a 42-year-old man who had been arrested in Kenora, finding no wrongdoing from officers.

Director of the SIU, Joseph Martino, explains in his report that the SIU was contacted about the injuries by the OPP on March 1, after the man was released from custody on February 7.

The Kenora Under 18 AAA Thistles are back home after a tough loss in Winnipeg. The Thistles took on the Bruins yesterday in a close game throughout, but ultimately lost in overtime 5-4. James Sinclair was between the pipes for Kenora.

The T.A Saints got yet another sweep in NorWOSSA action. The Saints hosted the Ignace Falcons where the Senior Girls' Basketball team won 33-20. The Senior and Junior Boys' Volleyball teams each took their matches in three straight sets.

The Beaver Brae Broncos will be in Sioux Lookout today to take on the Warriors in court sports action.

Tim Hortons, Scotiabank pull sponsorship of Hockey Canada, provincial bodies withholding funds

Hockey Quebec says it has lost confidence in Hockey Canada and will not transfer funds to the national organization, while a well-known Canadian brand extended its sponsorship boycott. 

Hockey Quebec confirmed to The Canadian Press that its board of directors adopted a motion Tuesday night stating it does not believe Hockey Canada's current structure can change hockey culture. The resolution was first reported by La Presse. 

Federal government reveals plan to improve access to diabetes care across Canada

The federal government has tabled a long-awaited plan in the House of Commons to improve access to diabetes treatment and prevention in Canada, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced Wednesday.

Liberal MP Sonia Sidhu called for the framework as part of a private member's bill that became law in 2021.

At the time, Diabetes Canada was clamouring for some kind of national vision to address the growing disease epidemic.

'Starting to heal': Victim of Saskatchewan mass stabbing wakes in hospital a widow

Joyce and Earl Burns were childhood sweethearts. 

They grew up together on James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, first as neighbours, then as husband and wife. 

"It was childhood love," said Victor Sanderson, a younger brother of Joyce Burns. He babysat their children and watched the couple grow old together.

He now visits his sister in a Saskatoon hospital room, where she recently regained consciousness after she was stabbed multiple times in the stomach and neck in a mass killing on the First Nation.

Education staff vote ‘yes’ towards strike action

Only one month into the 2022-2023 school year, the Ontario government and the union representing front-line education workers are facing upcoming strike action.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says on Monday, over 45,000 education staff – including custodians, early childhood educators, administrators and more – voted 96.5 per cent in favour of strike action.

Oct. 5 Sports Update

The Dryden GM Ice Dogs have a game on the road Friday against the Fort Frances Lakers, with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. The Dogs are 1-4 to start the 2022-2023 season, after a 3-1 win against the defending SIJHL champion Red Lake Miners on October 2.

Over the weekend, Beaver Brae and St. Thomas Aquinas hosted the Kenora Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The two host teams made it to the finals, with the Broncos taking the nail-biting final match 15 to 13.
