Ontario trucker fined for careless driving in Manitoba crash that killed two people
An inexperienced semi-truck driver from Ontario has been sentenced to pay a $3,000 fine for a collision that killed two people in eastern Manitoba.
Mark Lugli, who was 54, and his son 17-year-old Jacob Lugli, from Dryden, Ont., were on their way to a golf tournament when they died in a head-on crash on July 21, 2019, on the Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park.
The truck driver, Abhinav Abhinav, who was 22 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death and also faces a four-month driving ban.
Red Cross calls for civilian force, less reliance on military for disaster response
Canada needs a new civilian force to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies as such events become more common and severe, the head of the Canadian Red Cross said Tuesday.
In an interview CEO Conrad Sauvé compared Canada’s current approach to responding to emergencies to fighting a fire without any previous planning or preparation.
“We're trying to sort out who does what after the fire started,” he said.
Right now, Sauvé said, "we're not paying for the firehouse."
Lewis confident Poilievre will include all caucus voices, as he picks critics
Ontario Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis said Tuesday she is confident Pierre Poilievre will ensure all of the party's caucus voices are heard, amid calls for him to name her to a critic role.
Lewis ran against Poilievre in the Tories' recent leadership contest and placed a distant third behind his resounding first-ballot victory.
She hails from the party's social conservative wing and during the race repeatedly attacked Poilievre for not talking about issues like abortion, which she and some others in caucus oppose.
Investing in Women's Futures Program to receive $6.9M, applications now open
The Investing in Women's Futures Program will benefit greatly after the Ontario government announced a $6.9 million investment to expand and enhance the program over the next three years.
The program, which offers resources and training opportunities to help women develop in-demand skills for jobs, is being expanded to up to 10 new centers and further funding is being provided to the 23 centres currently offering the program. Women's Place Kenora is among the 23 and relies on funds from the government to operate the resource centre.

Shamandee passed away in her home in Kenora Ontario on September 22nd, 2022.
She was born September 4th, 1995. Raised by her mother Betty Loon who shortly passed away after her on the on September 28, 2022.
Shamandee leaves behind her children Dante, Jide, Deja and Aryeon and her two sisters Chelsea Swain, Bernadine Loon and her second half Tyler Powassin and one of her best friends Cassie, and her numerous cousins, uncle's and aunts and alot of friends.

Tatyanna Harrison’s 21st birthday would have been on Sept. 29.
Her mother described Tatyanna, whose body was found in Vancouver earlier this year, as a courageous woman with the gift of gab and a deep love for learning.
“It affected (Tatyanna) deeply to witness anything that was unfair or cruel. She wasn't afraid to use her voice to speak on it and this has always been the core of who she was,” Natasha Harrison said.
“I know in my heart she wouldn't be OK with the injustice surrounding her passing.”
Legislation to temporarily boost GST rebate expected to pass this week
Legislation to temporarily double GST rebates to help low- and modest-income Canadians cope with high inflation is expected to pass the House of Commons later this week.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says the measure is "a balance between compassion and fiscal responsibility."
Freeland appeared at the House of Common Finance Committee Monday where she commended MPs from all parties for supporting the measure.
The bill is expected to come to a final vote in the House of Commons Thursday, after which it will be sent to the Senate.
Police seek help in weapons assault investigation in Sioux Lookout
Officers with the Sioux Lookout Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for public assistance in the investigation of an assault with a weapon.
On Friday, September 9, 2022, around 10:00 pm, OPP officers responded to an assault in progress on Lakeshore Drive in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. Upon arrival, police and ambulance located and assisted one victim in medical distress.
Paramedics Union calling for federal support following death in Onigaming F.N
The Canadian Union of Public Employees is calling for further support from the federal government following a death in Onigaming First Nation.
On September 15, Onigaming Chief Jeff Copenace alleges that when a young First Nations man went into medical distress and emergency responders were called around 10:30 a.m., an ambulance with two Northwest EMS paramedics parked at the edge of the community and refused to help with the situation.
