The Dryden GM Ice Dogs are gearing up for their first game of the regular season against the Kam River Fighting Walleye on September 23, after the Superior International Junior Hockey League announced its schedule.

Reports of blue-green algae on Wabigoon Lake

Residents in the Wabigoon area are cautioned to keep out of Wabigoon Lake following a report of an algae bloom. 

Blue-green algae was reported near Rowatt Road in the Bonny Bay area, which is being tested by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Although the results are unconfirmed at this time, people should treat the water as though there is blue-green algae. 

Queen’s Park kicks off summer session, budget vote expected

Ontario’s politicians have returned to the Legislature ahead of a five-week summer session to pass Ontario’s 2022 budget at an unusual time.

The PCs released their 2022 provincial budget in April, but the passage of the piece of legislation was dependent on the party getting re-elected in June. Now, under Doug Ford’s majority government, the party is able to once again push their platform forward.

‘Results-oriented subculture’ a factor behind Sachigo Lake plane crash

Dangerous decisions by an airplane Captain in December of 2019 were the primary cause behind a major plane crash near Sachigo Lake First Nation almost three years ago.

On December 3, 2019, North Star Air’s Basler BT-67 Cargo Plane left the Red Lake Airport before crashing into trees and terrain about 500 metres southwest of the Sachigo Lake Airport’s gravel runway, sustaining substantial damage.

Only two crew members were aboard the flight at the time, and no one was injured in the incident.

Canadian Blood Services urging people to donate as it faces collection challenges

Canadian Blood Services is calling on donors to book and keep appointments as it faces a decrease in collections.

The organization said Monday it currently has only four days worth of O+ blood type supply and five days worth of O- and B- blood types, along with six days worth of A- blood type and seven days worth of A+ and B+ blood types.

Spokeswoman Delphine Denis said collections have been steadily decreasing since July 1.

Denis said the blood-collecting agency closely monitors the days of the available blood supply.

NWHU reports ‘extreme increase’ in COVID-19, masks strongly recommended

Leadership with the Northwestern Health Unit is sounding the alarm about the spread of COVID-19 in the Kenora area, and is once again ‘strongly’ recommending that masks return in indoor spaces.

The Northwestern Health Unit held an impromptu media session on August 5 with regional media members, with an update from the region’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kit Young Hoon.

Aug. 8 Sports Update

Oliver and Jason Gibbins of Morson, ON are the big winners after KBI 2022.

The two anglers posted 57.18 lbs of bass over the three-day tournament, edging out last year’s winners Ian Waterer and Motei Demers of Selkirk with 54.61 lbs. Kenora’s Jamie Bruce and Bryan Gustafson placed third with 53.24 lbs.

Staffing crisis continues at Kenora Hospital, Emergency Room

Leadership with the Lake of the Woods District Hospital say they’re continuing to navigate their ongoing staffing shortages with ‘white-knuckles’ as they try to hang on and survive the summer season.

President and CEO Ray Racette held a regional media conference August 5 to update their ongoing situation, which includes a shortage of general hospital staff and physicians, as well as a shortage of staff for the Emergency Department during the hospital’s busiest months of the year.
