The tall tale of NWO’s travelling goat: Goaty

The story of northwestern Ontario’s travelling goat is only just beginning.

We tuned into the story after a post to Kenora’s ever-popular Kenora Rant N Rave Facebook group, but Goaty’s story ran much deeper than we ever expected. Here’s what we know:

Jones Road resident Ivanna Strecker says she returned from a trip to the beach around 12 p.m. July 16 and had found a friendly goat at her home’s side door.

Rainfall warning issued for NWO

A rainfall warning’s in effect for northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada warns that heavy rain is expected to begin Tuesday morning and will continue into Tuesday night, with up to 60 mm possible by Wednesday morning.

Meteorologists warn the heavy downpours are expected to be associated with severe thunderstorms as well, which are expected to taper off by Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada reminds residents to seek shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Multiple road closures starting July 19, delays to be expected

There will be multiple road closures and delays in Dryden this week.  

Starting today, the King Street Underpass with be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The closure will start at 8:00 am and last until 4:00 pm on Friday, July 22. 

This closure is necessary to complete road maintenance.  

Deer Lake Man arrested and charged following a suspicious death

One person was arrested and charged in Deer Lake First Nation following a suspicious death. 

Shortly after 2:00 am on July 16, 2022, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to a call of a person in medical distress at a residence on Nursing Station Road.

Officers located a deceased adult male inside the home.  

Major damage reported from Sunday’s severe storm

Hydro workers and emergency responders are still cleaning up after Sunday night’s severe thunderstorm in northwestern Ontario, with high winds, heavy downpours and reports of tornado activity near Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

Members of the Kenora OPP and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire and Rescue were on the scene of Caliper Lake Provincial Park after multiple trees fell on campers and vehicles and blocked roadways after the storm.

Church to be torn down, replaced with $3.6 million facility

Community Living Dryden – Sioux Lookout is looking to demolish their dilapidated church building at 99 Albert Street to redevelop it into a two-storey $3.6 million facility, with support from the city.

99 Albert Street is the current location of the former New Life Church, which has been purchased by CLDSL.

The organization is now applying for support through the city’s Community Improvement Plan to help cover up to 100 per cent of the demolition project’s landfill tipping fees.

July 18 Sports Update

The Class of 2022 for the Kenora Sports Hall of Fame has been announced.

The inductees in the athletes' category are Edie Fisher, Malcolm Fisher, and Dennis Olson who is being inducted posthumously. Kyle Koch is entering the Hall of Fame in the professional athlete category. Debbie Novak, Barry Reynard, Andrea Ronnebeck and Noreen Dunbar are being inducted as builders.

"We need to see that movement," Melillo pushing for federal help with healthcare crisis

Melillo commented once again on the need for federal help when it comes to the healthcare shortages in the north.  

The entire nation is feeling the effects of the physician and healthcare worker shortage in Canada, but the situation in northwestern Ontario (NWO) is really reaching a boiling point.  

Catholic dioceses failed in past to raise money promised to survivors. Will they now?

When 48 Catholic church entities signed on to fundraise $25 million for survivors under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, it was spelled out they would do so through their "best efforts."

Ken Young puts it another way. 

"It was a weasel clause," the former Manitoba regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations said in a recent interview. 

"And they used it."

Mental health experts say Canada should have a three-digit suicide crisis hotline

Canada must make good on a long-standing promise to implement a centralized mental health crisis line that bypasses police and connects those in need with professionals who can help them, experts argued as a similar system went live in the United States.

The new 988 mental health hotline American authorities launched on Saturday will, once fully operational, offer residents struggling with suicidal thoughts an easy-to-remember number that will connect them with trained mental health counsellors rather than law enforcement personnel.
