Dryden OPP investigating following a suspicious death
OPP are investigating a suspicious death in Dryden.
The Dryden Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a house on Whyte Avenue for a reported assault.
The incident took place on July 13, 2022, at approximately 10:00 pm.
Officers located a deceased individual at the location.
Municipal staff sign new deal with wage increases in 2022, 2023
Leadership with the City of Dryden say they’re satisfied with the city’s new deal with unionized municipal staff and that they were able to avoid any potential strikes.
Dryden has approved and signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 1730, which outlines a new two-year deal for municipal staff that includes wage increases, better benefits and allowances and more.
Solar panel projects coming to 5 First Nation communities in NWO
47 Indigenous communities in Ontario will see nearly $5 million in funding to build and improve energy-efficiency projects to offset high costs in the north, including five communities in northwestern Ontario.
The Independent Electricity System Operator has launched a new Save on Energy First Nations Community Building Retrofit Program, which provides $100,000 in funding to on-reserve communities for energy-efficiency projects.
Canada bringing back mandatory random testing of travellers arriving at main airports
After a month-long pause, the federal government is bringing back random, mandatory COVID-19 tests for vaccinated travellers arriving at Canada's four main airports.
Ottawa paused the tests in mid-June as it faced criticism from tourism and air travel groups about the chaos at Canadian airports.
The government also said it planned to move the tests themselves to locations outside of airports.
That means that when the tests resume next week, they will completed either at an in-person or virtual appointment.
OPP looking to identify suspect in a theft of a motor vehicle
Rainy River OPP is looking for help from the public.
On July 10, 2022, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Rainy River District Detachment officers were notified that a 2010 grey Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from a campground in the Lake Despair area.

Sol Mamakwa, MPP for the riding of Kiiwetinoong, has been named one of the new Deputy Leaders of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) by Interim Party Leader Peter Tabuns.
Mamakwa is the first First Nations Deputy Leader in Ontario.

Health Canada approves first COVID-19 vax for youngest kids
Canada's drug regulator approved Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for infants and preschoolers, making it the first vaccine approved for that age group in the country.
Health Canada now says the Moderna vaccine can be given to young children between the ages of six months and five years old in doses one-quarter the size of that approved for adults.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization is expected to provide advice on its use later today.
Dryden Memorial Arena set to $2.8 million worth of upgrades
Exciting updates are set to happen to a major Dryden facility after City Council approved major upgrades.
Dryden City Council has officially approved a $2,817,880 contract to provide major upgrades to the Dryden Memorial Arena. The Arena is expected to receive a two-story expansion that will include accessible washrooms, a multipurpose meeting space, and a new viewing area.
Upgrades are set to begin this year.

Hockey Canada says it is in the process of making changes.
Whether those moves will be enough to satisfy the general public, fans, federal government and corporate sponsors remains to be seen.
The sport's under-fire national federation made a series of announcements in an open letter to Canadians published Thursday, including the reopening of a third-party investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving members of the country's 2018 world junior team.
