Local Sioux Lookout youth wins OPP bursary.  

The Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is proud to announce that a local student, Eric Goretzki, is the recipient of a $1000 OPP Youth Foundation bursary.  

According to the OPP, Goretzki was his school's valedictorian and he excelled academically. He will be going to the University of Waterloo in the fall to study business.  

Congratulations Eric!  

Sports Update July 8

A hometown hockey hero is being recognized by Lakehead University. Nicknamed ‘The Kenora Komet’ in his youth for his blistering speed, Kenora’s Jeff Richards has been named to Lakehead University’s Wall of Fame, with an official induction ceremony set for October.  The 5’10” forward is Lakehead’s second-leading all-time scorer with 252 points in 170 games and could be considered the most impactful player in Thunderwolves history. He's the cousin of Stanley Cup Champion Mike Richards, and now works as an educator with Kenora Catholic. 

Ousting of U.K. PM Boris Johnson won't affect ties with Canada, trade talks

The Canadian government says it is business as usual with the U.K. despite the dramatic ousting of U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson by his party.

Global Affairs Canada and the Department for International Trade signalled Thursday that the relationship with the U.K. will remain strong and that the toppling of Britain's prime minister will not affect Canada's negotiations on a crucial free-trade agreement.

RLMCMH Emergency Department closure avoided, Mamakwa comments on the severity of the situation

There has been a positive update on the RLMCMH Emergency Department closure situation.  

The Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital (RLMCMH) announced earlier in the week that due to physician and staffing shortages, they were going to be forced to close the Emergency Department for a 12-hour period this evening, July 7. Thankfully, that will no longer have to happen.  

Further openings announced for Whiteshell Provincial Park

Manitoba Parks has announced some additional reopenings in the Whiteshell.

Provincial Road (PR) 307 in Whiteshell Provincial Park is now fully open through the north Whiteshell area from Seven Sisters Falls to Rennie. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is continuing ongoing repairs of PR 307 and floodwaters remain on the road in some areas. Expect delays when travelling in the park, use caution and drive slowly when coming up to or passing work crews.

A look at the next stage in the battle against COVID-19: bivalent vaccines

Predictions of a fall COVID-19 wave make another booster vaccine campaign likely but questions abound over how the virus will continue to evolve and what protections a new shot could offer.

Several vaccine manufacturers are racing to develop formulas that take into account the more infectious Omicron variant now driving cases, while policymakers are laying the groundwork for another large-scale vaccine blitz.

Sports Update July 7

Another jam-packed night in the Kenora slo-pitch league. On the women's side, Vonda Fletcher had a home run and Maddy Wiebe hit two triples to help the Dunit Diamonds take down Bat Intentions. Debra Kakeway and Chloe Skead each had a home run in the Devil's Gap Chiefs victory over Bob's Burgers. Elsewhere, the Neniska Crushers took down KTown Kafe. On the men's side, the D Smith A's took the game over Sons of Pitches, and it was a tight one, but Lakeside Dental took the win over Matheson Bay.

Kenora gas prices begin to drop

In some ‘lighter on the bank account’ news, gas prices in Kenora have once again dropped. 

As of 2:00 pm, July 6, gas prices at one Kenora gas station dropped by 9 cents.  

The gas price at the Husky on Lakeview Drive went from 214.9 per litre of regular fuel to 205.0 per litre.  

Rainy River OPP execute search warrant and seize unlawful firearms 

The Rainy River Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received information on June 29, about an individual who was unlawfully in possession of firearms at a Lake of the Woods Township residence.  

With assistance from the Rainy River Detachment Crime Unit and the North West Region Emergency Response Team, OPP officers were able to execute a search warrant and seize a .22 calibre rifle, pellet guns and ammunition.
