Morse residents awarded for attempted rescue

Ajara DIas and Jiyeong Lee or Morse risked their lives in an attempt to save their neighbour from a burning building.

For their heroism, the Royal Canadian Human Association awarded them silver medals for bravery.

On March 8th of this year, Lee and Dias were returning to Morse with family and saw smoke rising from a home in the area.

On their Facebook page the RCHA said that as others stood watching the fire, Jieyong called 911 and then went with Ajara to the front door to check on a 78-year-old man they knew was living in the home.

Three southwest residents honoured for saving woman from attack

"We just did what was right. We saw something happening, and we just couldn't let it go on."

Nora McLearn downplays her courage, but the Royal Canadian Humane Association thought enough of it to award her a silver medal for bravery after saving a woman from an axe attack in Swift Current last spring. 

Her grandson Chace Riley of Neville received a bronze medal for his role, while Swift Current's Danielle Armstrong was awarded with an honorary testimonial certificate.

Saskatchewan falls to defending champions at U18s

The defending gold medalists from Ontario Red got the better of Saskatchewan 5-2 today at the Hockey Canada U18 Women's National Championship in New Brunswick.

Defenceman Rayna Hennie and right winger Raela Packet of the Swift Current Innovation Federal Credit Union are suiting up for Saskatchewan.

Ontario built leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Saskatchewan was twice able to cut those leads to two goals but couldn't catch up to the Ontario squad that has won the event thirteen out of fourteen times.

Stewart Valley school construction in holding pattern

The process for rebuilding Stewart Valley's school is going nowhere fast. 

That's the sentiment from the Chinook School Division as they await word from their insurers on plans for rebuilding the school.

"There's no update whatsoever," said Chinook Director of Education Mark Benesh. "We're still waiting on insurers to get back to us to give us an update on those costs. So we're kind of in a holding pattern along with the school community. I would say there's some level of frustration all around because we would like to be moving this forward."

Success man charged with stealing almost $60k in fuel

A Success man has been charged with stealing almost $60,000 in diesel fuel.

33-year-old Kenton Wotherspoon faces charges including 10 counts of unlawful use of a credit card, eight counts of theft under $5000, two counts of theft over $5000 and three counts of trafficking in stolen property.

"We were notified by a business that an ex-employee used a fuel card," said RCMP Constable Cory Riggs. "And they purchased up to $57,969.55 in diesel."

Police say the complaint came from an oilfield company in the Lloydminster area. 

Edel campaigning for change in Rosetown-Delisle

Saskatchewan NDP candidate Brenda Edel is making a push down the stretch of the provincial election to challenge Saskatchewan Party MLA Jim Reiter in Rosetown-Delisle.

This is Edel's second attempt to unseat Reiter, who has been an MLA since 2007.

Reiter won the 2020 election against Edel with 77.7% of the vote. 

"I felt the province and people of Rosetown-Delisle deserve better than they're receiving," Edel said. "I hear messages on the doorstep people that are struggling being able to afford to pay bills, healthcare, affordability and crime."

Mo glows up

A "glow up" for a local institution in Ponteix.

Mo the plesiosaur got a fresh new paint job over the summer from local artist Annika Roberge. 

"Mo was recently moved to town and was painted white and primed," Roberge said. "He was looking fairly bland. I went to the town and offered to paint. Over the summer I spent many hours drawing out plans and painting."

 

Leader man sentenced to almost three years

A Leader man is serving almost three years in prison for a number of weapons and drug related charges.

Daniel Koldingnes pleaded guilty to charges including possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, theft of a truck, breaking and entering of a garage, fraud, possession of a handgun for dangerous purpose, fail to comply with a release order to not carry weapons outside his residence, and breach of a probation order to not possess identity or financial documents that aren't his.
