Bombers bucked in Calgary in inaugural Stampede Bowl

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers came into the inaugural Stampede Bowl unbeaten and riding high in the saddle after being pegged — once again — as Canadian Football League contenders.

They are now exiting Cowtown after being thrown from their steed and then lassoed, hogtied and branded by the Calgary Stampeders in sloppy, mistake-filled 37-16 loss in front of 22,485 at McMahon Stadium, a result which drops them to 3-1 — ditto for the Stamps — and takes a whole pile of shine off what had been an impressive unbeaten start to the season.

Adult and Teen Challenge approved to take over Steinbach building

Adult and Teen Challenge has received the green light from Steinbach City Council to relocate its thrift store and offices into the city’s industrial park on the west side — a decision council supported unanimously.

The organization applied for a conditional use permit to operate at 16 Pioneer Road, within the M1 Light Industrial Zone. That zoning does not normally allow retail operations, but council made an exception based on the nature of the project and the existing structure on the site.

Heat warning triggers intense overnight storms, more thunderstorms expected

The hot and humid air moving through Manitoba brought some intense thunderstorms overnight Friday, and the weather systems aren't done yet.

"We had pretty strong wind gusts [last night]," says Dan Fulton, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC). "The highest I saw was 115 km/h, but there were quite a few stations that reported over the 90-115 km/h range."

The areas of Manitoba that saw the most precipitation and winds were the southern areas near the U.S.A. border from west to east.

The “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer, who was raised in Timmins, Ont., last took the stage at the Stampede in 2014.

Wildfire prompts second evacuation of Lynn Lake in northern Manitoba

The 600 residents of Lynn Lake in northern Manitoba are being told to leave town for the second time this year due to wildfires.

Town officials say a fire is threatening Manitoba Hydro transmission lines and, if those lines are damaged, the community could be without power for a month.

The town is offering transportation for evacuees and a reception centre has been set up in Brandon, about 1,100 kilometres by road to the south.
