Funeral For:  Dan Thiessen 
Funeral Date: May 15, 2025 
Dan Thiessen, 71, of Altona formerly of Rosenfeld, passed away Saturday, May 10th in the RM of Emerson Franklin. He is survived by his wife Elsie, 2 daughters, 1 son, and their families. He was predeceased by 1 daughter in infancy. 
The celebration of life for Dan Thiessen will be held Thursday, May 15th at 2:07pm at Altona EMMC. Dan was known for setting odd times, never exactly on the hour. Burial will take place prior to the service at 1pm at Altona Cemetery. 

A grass fire in Transcona that spread to area businesses and sent large plumes of black smoke into the sky Monday afternoon is now under control. 

The fire broke out in the 600 block of Gunn Road just after 2 p.m. yesterday. 

Due to strong winds and extremely dry conditions, the grass fire quickly spread, moving towards a commercial and industrial area and leading to the evacuation of businesses in the area.

Travel to the United States took another hit in April with booking agents saying an "elbows up" attitude over the trade war has Canadians pulling back. 

Canadian residents returning by automobile from the U.S. in April fell on a year-over-year basis for the fourth consecutive month, preliminary numbers released by Statistics Canada showed Monday. The 1.2 million trips represented a 35.2 per cent drop from the same month in 2024 and 45.1 per cent lower than April 2019, before the pandemic.

A Christian ministry is anticipating its upcoming day dedicated to prayer in hopes of sharing the gospel with even more campers this summer. 

One Hope Canada is a national ministry that focuses on sharing the gospel with children and youth, helping kids get an opportunity they might not otherwise have. For example, they help children who come from families that cannot afford to cover the cost of sending them to camp. 

While the recent federal election turned into a tight race between the Liberals and Conservatives that left other parties trailing far behind, a new poll suggests most Canadians don't want the country end up with a two-party system.

The poll of over 1,600 Canadians, conducted by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies between May 1 and 3, suggests only 21 per cent of Canadians think the country would be better off with a system where two parties dominate the political landscape.

We could call that the ABCs of love. And I don't know of anybody who would turn his back on such magnetic, encouraging statements. 

There is nothing shallow about authentic love. Nor is it a magic wand we whip out and wave over a problem with a whoosh, hoping all the pain will go away. 

Emergency crews continue to battle what was a massive blaze in north Transcona on Monday evening, but officials say the fire is now considered contained.

The City of Winnipeg says a grass fire broke out around 2 p.m. in the 600 block of Gunn Road.

Scott Wilkinson, Deputy Chief, Fire Rescue Operations & Training for the WFPS, says that the fire did spread to some structures on the south side of Gunn Road as well as "car storage." Wilkinson says some of the structures have been lost and some businesses suffered "significant damage."

The dream to continue to save souls and sing to the bound and broken will continue for another night for American Idol contestant, Breanna Nix. 

The singer, who is unafraid to put God front and centre on a national stage, made it into the top 5 on Sunday evening.
