Principal, teachers to sleep on school roof if reading and fundraising goal reached
Prairie Central Adventist Academy in Winnipeg is celebrating 100 years of education this year, and one of the ways they're commemorating this is by challenging the students with a unique reading goal.
"We put out a challenge this year, challenging our students to read a certain number of minutes," says Ian Mighty, the principal of Prairie Central Adventist Academy. "At the same time, if they're collecting funds for the project we have here at the school, if they achieve those goals, then the five of us would spend a night on the school roof."
Verse of the day: March 10
1 Peter 3:15
"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

With U.S. threats of making Canada the 51st state, hundreds rally on Parliament Hill
Hundreds of people gathered on Parliament Hill for the "Elbows up, Canada" rally as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens economywide tariffs and making the country into the 51st state.
The "Elbows up, Canada" rally came together after four days of planning, drawing big name speakers including former foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and stand up comedian Shaun Majumder.
The core message was simple, Canada is not for sale.
Elbows up is a hockey term describing an effective way to protect yourself from an opposing player.
Trudeau says that 'Canada is not a given' in farewell speech amid Trump threats
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that freedom, democracy and Canada "are not a given" in his farewell speech to Liberals just before former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney was announced as the new Liberal leader.
This comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens Canada with economic annexation and places tariffs on Canadian imports coming into the States.
"This is a nation-defining moment. Democracy is not a given. Freedom, it's not a given. Canada is not a given. None of those happen by accident. None of them will continue without effort," Trudeau said.
Mark Carney to become next PM after sweeping Liberal leadership race
Federal Liberals elected Mark Carney to lead their party into the next election in a resounding first-ballot victory on Sunday, putting him on track to soon become the next prime minister of Canada.
This brings an end to an unusually short, two-month long leadership race called to replace outgoing leader Justin Trudeau and clears the path for an expected early election call.
Snowfall warning issued for central Manitoba
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for several regions in central Manitoba, with 10 to 15 cm of snow expected.
The national forecaster says a developing low-pressure system will bring heavy snow overnight Sunday into Monday, with snowfall tapering off Monday afternoon as the system moves into Ontario.
The warning covers a large swath of central Manitoba, stretching from the Saskatchewan border through the Parkland region and into areas east of Lake Winnipeg.
Liberals to turn the page on the Justin Trudeau era as party selects successor
Liberals are gathering in Ottawa on the final day of their party's leadership contest to vote for who they think is best to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the helm.
Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney remains the presumed front runner and as of this weekend has lapped his opponents in fundraising figures by millions of dollars.
Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Liberal lawmaker Karina Gould and Montreal businessman Frank Baylis are all vying for the party's top job.
Premier hopes identification of remains found at landfill helps family move forward ▶️
Manitoba's premier says he has spoken with the family of an Indigenous woman murdered by a serial killer, and he hopes the confirmation that her remains have been found during a search at a Winnipeg landfill helps them move forward.
"For so long now, years now, her journey to the next phase with her family being able to grieve her, lay her to rest, have a funeral or however they want to remember (her), has been on hold and disrupted and made the subject of so much public scrutiny," Wab Kinew told reporters at an event Saturday at an Indigenous resource centre.
Nestaweya River Trail closes after a 68-day season
The Nestaweya River Trail has officially closed for the season after 68 days of winter fun.
Winnipeg's outdoor river skating and walking trail, which opened on Dec. 31, 2024, exceeded the average 56-day season and far outlasted last year’s record-low nine-day season.
This year, the trail was made possible through the Trail Together campaign, where winter enthusiasts “adopted” a metre of the trail to support The Forks Foundation. More than 985 metres were adopted, with donors adding their names or the names of loved ones to their sections.
