Joy Smith Foundation launches trucking industry labour trafficking awareness drive

The Joy Smith Foundation has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at tackling labour trafficking in Manitoba’s trucking industry.

The campaign was unveiled Tuesday at the Rosser weigh scale during National Trucking Week, with support from the Manitoba Trucking Association and Winnipeg Crime Stoppers.

After a tragic loss in the wild, a new guest has arrived at the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.  

Caring for all creatures 

Zoe Nakata, executive director at Wildlife Haven, says their facility treats a variety of critters in need. In 2025 alone, Wildlife Haven has cared for over 177 different species. 

“Baby otters, baby pelicans, eagles and owls. All sorts of animals,” Nakata explains. 

Scammers impersonating Winnipeg police in phone calls, officials warn

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is warning the public after it received multiple reports of scam calls from people claiming to be WPS. 

The WPS Communication Centre is continuing to receive numerous reports from people being contacted by telephone by individuals who have been identifying themselves as “Winnipeg Police”.

The reports have come from Manitobans, as well as various provinces, all indicating these calls falsely originated from the WPS non-emergency number of “204-986-6222”.

Peter Nygard wants Winnipeg sex assault charges stayed citing lost evidence

Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard wants charges of sexual assault and unlawful confinement stayed because of police bungling.

His lawyer, Gerri Wiebe, told court Monday that police failed to keep records of the complainant's first interaction with officers nearly 30 years ago, undercutting Nygard’s right to a fair trial.

"I would say that you ought to find that the loss of these two police files were due to unacceptable negligence," Wiebe told provincial court Judge Mary Kate Harvie.

The federal government says it plans to launch a public registry to keep Canadians in the loop on its growing use of artificial intelligence.

"We are seeing a lot more activity across departments and agencies," Stephen Burt, the government’s chief data officer, told The Canadian Press.

Federal government says it has found almost 500 ways to cut red tape

The federal government says it has found almost 500 ways to streamline regulations and cut costs following a 60-day red tape review exercise.

Departments and agencies have published reports identifying measures to make them more efficient and eliminate complicated or redundant regulations or processes.

Examples include a Canada Border Services Agency proposal to end the rule requiring that travellers arriving in Canada only on their way to another country, be examined by the agency before making their way to their departing flight.

Silver Alert cancelled after missing 85-year-old safely located

The Winnipeg Police Service says that an 85-year-old Winnipeg man has been safely located.

Police had issued a Silver Alert just after midnight on Tuesday, saying that the man hadn't been seen since Noon on Monday. He had last been seen in the Sage Creek area of Winnipeg. 

Just before noon on Tuesday, the WPS sent out another release saying the man had been found safe.

The WPS issues a Silver Alert when a senior or vulnerable adult goes missing.

Weatherlogics calls for warm fall, but then cold and snowy winter

A meteorologist says this week's weather should be a sign of things to come for the rest of September. And September's weather should be a sign of things to come for fall in Southern Manitoba. 

Scott Kehler with Weatherlogics says after a week of cooler weather, we should see a return to above-normal temperatures this week. The normal high for September 9 in Winnipeg is 20 degrees. This week is expected to produce daily high temperatures ranging from 23 to 27 degrees. 

Kehler says this change in weather is a result of a reversal in the jet stream.
