SPSA expects average wildfire season

After a busy wildfire season last year, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is expecting an average one this year.  

The SPSA provided an update on what we could possibly expect this year.  

Vice-President of Operations Steve Roberts noted compared to this time last year, the number of wildfires is down. At this point last year, there were 34 wildfires while this year there are 23 wildfires, with all of them contained.  

Woman killed vehicle-pedestrian collision on Highway 11

A 35-year old woman was killed on Sunday night on Highway 11 near the junction of Highway 2 by Prince Albert after she was struck by a vehicle.

RCMP said they received multiple reports of a person in the middle of the highway which was followed up by a report of a pedestrian struck by an SUV.

The woman from Patuanak was declared deceased at the scene. 

The 65-year old female driver of the SUV and an adult female passenger from Saskatoon didn't receive any injuries. 

Roadways in the area were blocked off during the investigation but have since reopened. 

Red Wings storm past Broncos with three third period goals

The Humboldt Broncos lost control in their pursuit of sixth place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings, as they were defeated by the Weyburn Red Wings 3-2 on Tuesday night. 

After a scoreless first period, Rylan Hue opened the scoring for Humboldt, as the Broncos had a slim 1-0 going into the final period.  

Broncos honour season's best and graduating players at their awards banquet

 

The Humboldt Broncos held their awards banquet on Sunday, March 2 and honoured their graduating players.

Broncos Jacob Strizzi nominated for SJHL Forward of the Year

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) announced their award nominees on Thursday.  

One member of the Humboldt Broncos received a nomination as Jacob Strizzi has been nominated for Forward of the Year. 

This season, Strizzi ranks second in the SJHL in points (66) as of March 6. He is third in the league in goals (28) and is also third in the league in assists (38).  

Preventing a snow melt from creating a water problem in your home

The first signs of the end of winter have sprouted over the last week with snow beginning to melt.  

With an excessive amount of snow over the last few months, SGI wants to remind residents to clear off the melting snow before ice dams form along with water sneaking into the basement of your home.  

Waskesiu RCMP seeking assistance to identify suspect

Waskesiu RCMP are seeking information about a suspect involved in an attempted sexual assault from last summer.  

An investigation determined that on August 31, a male approached a female in a washroom at the beach in Waskesiu during the evening hours and attempted to sexually assault her. The woman was able to escape and did not report any injuries to police. 

The Waskesiu RCMP is now seeking information about the suspect. 

Senior hockey league & provincial playoff update

Plenty of heartbreak this weekend for local senior hockey teams competing in provincials. 

In the ‘A’ category, the Leroy Braves were eliminated by the Kyle Elks, after dropping a pair of games on home ice.  

After picking a game one win on the road, the Braves were defeated by the Elks 4-3 on Saturday and then 6-2 on Sunday. Kyle moves on to the North Final where they will meet the Kenaston Blizzard. 

Broncos embark on final multi-game road trip of the season

The Humboldt Broncos will head out on their final multi-game road trip of the season, as they head to the Parkland region of the province, on Friday they tangle with the Yorkton Terriers and then on Saturday they square off with the Melville Millionaires.  

It has been a while since the Broncos have been on the road for back-to-back games, the last occurrence was the final three games in 2024, when Humboldt met the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins in a three-game trip.
