Bezan credits team effort for victory in tight Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman race

James Bezan, re-elected as MP for Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman, attributes his win to an “incredible team effort” amid shifting voter priorities and a nail-biting national race. 

A campaign built on boots and ballots 

Bezan highlights the work of over 200 volunteers who counted ballots, scrutinized results, and covered the sprawling rural Manitoba riding with signs, door-knocking, and phone calls.

Manitoba grants $472K for St. Laurent’s new fire truck upgrades

The Manitoba government  announced $512,500 in funding Wednesday to bolster fire protection services in two Interlake municipalities. The Rural Municipality (RM) of St. Laurent will receive $472,500 for a new fire truck, while Winnipeg Beach gets $40,000 for a specialized truck for its rescue boat. The grants fall under the province’s  $42-million Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunity (GRO) program.

St. Laurent seeks funds for first Canadian library to offer French, English and Michif services

The Rural Municipality (RM) of St. Laurent is pursuing provincial grants to modernize its Old Town Hall and establish a trilingual library offering French, English, and Michif services. Reeve Richard Chartrand says the projects aim to improve accessibility and cultural inclusivity for residents. 

Six party candidates present in Selkirk Interlake Eastman for 2025 Federal Election

With only two weeks remaining before election day, voters in Selkirk Interlake Eastman will have six candidates to choose from in the upcoming federal election.

Monday, April 7th was the close of nominations for candidates in the April 28 election.

Elections Canada has now updated its list of confirmed candidates for each constituency.

The six candidates for Selkirk Interlake Eastman are:

Halldorson named ACHA All-Star in rookie season at ACC

Another athlete from rural Manitoba has been commended for their performance at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) level. Following her rookie season, Rachel Halldorson of Lundar was named a First-Team All-Star for the ACHA's Women's second division.

Halldorson says it was an unexpected honour.

"I didn't know they did all-stars, so I was pretty shocked when it first came out. But it's pretty awesome, I never thought I'd get that, but it's been pretty amazing. I couldn't have done it without my team, that's for sure."

RM of St. Laurent focusing on special health and emergency-related training programs

The RM of St. Laurent received word from St. John's Ambulance a month and a half ago concerning federal funding for naloxone training. Reeve Rick Chartrand says it was a great plus for the municipality.

"It was for those that experience opioid overdose and we were able to coordinate with the fire department," says Chartrand. "We invited other members from the Woodlands Fire Department. We had teachers and community members that attended and it was attended very well."
