Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency concerned with long-term forecast

The Saskatchewan Public Safety agency held an update on the province’s wildfire situation and as of 1:30 p.m. on July 30, 2025, there are 57 active wildfires burning in the province. The year-to-date is 406 fires, well above the five-year average of 333 at this time.

Steve Roberts is the Vice President of Operations for the SPSA and says they are receiving wide support from local firefighters, 15 structural fire departments as well as support from Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Mexico and Australia.

The Saskatchewan NDP says the world is looking to the province to lead in energy

After a week-long session at the Mid-West Legislative Conference wrapped up, the Saskatchewan NDP say that what they saw here, as well as recently down in Washington State at the Pacific North West-Western Economic Region Conference, is a clear signal that Saskatchewan has incredibly unlimited potential and many people in this country, in the United States and around the world are looking to the province to help solve some of the problems and challenges when it comes to the world’s energy future.

Flood mapping to help determine elevations needed for future development in the province

 

In an effort to protect properties in high-risk flood zones, the government is changing the flood risk evaluations. The provincial government announced on July 31, 2025, they are adopting a one-in-200-year flood standard which aligns with the regulations of ‘The Planning and Development Act of 2007’.

This alignment is to ensure Saskatchewan communities can build and grow in a sustainable way especially where flood risk is high.

Premier Moe invites all Canadian premiers to join western trade partnership

The focus was on internal trade Thursday and Premier Scott Moe spoke in Saskatoon encouraging all Canadian provinces and territories to join the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA). In a letter sent yesterday to premiers in the remaining provinces and territories he says it would promote the goal of building a strong Canadian economy.

Saskatchewan Opposition say the government handed over a contract to another out-of-province company

The Saskatchewan NDP are sounding the alarm today about the Saskatchewan Government awarding the province’s Northern Saskatchewan tire recycling contract to Emterra Tire Recycling, a company headquartered in Ontario, which the Saskatchewan NDP say follows the provincial government’s decision to hand the southern contract to U.S.-based company CRM.  In both cases, the Opposition say the work was previously done by Shercom Industries, a Saskatchewan company that invested over $20 million into a recycling facility just north of Saskatoon.  The facility is now shuttered, and more than 90 Saskat

Saskatchewan NDP ask Provincial Ombudsman to consider adding specific areas to wildfire investigation

Last month the Provincial Ombudsman opened up an investigation about concerns over the provincial government’s handling of the wildfire crisis and the Saskatchewan NDP are hoping Ombudsman Sharon Pratchler will give attention to three areas the Saskatchewan NDP believe should be included: Housing and income support for evacuees, mental health support for evacuees and first responders and emergency alert system failure.

SPSA update indicates precipitation has helped tackle the Shoe Fire, four communities remain under evacuation order

In the latest update from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, there are currently 19 active wildfires in the province. Of those active fires, one is categorized as contained, five are not contained, 11 are ongoing assessment, and two are listed as protecting values.    

Four communities remain under evacuation orders, including East Trout Lake, as well as priority individuals from Creighton, Denare Beach and Cumberland House. The SPSA Recovery Task Team has started to meet with community leaders to review and discuss recovery efforts.  

Saskatchewan NDP say the Sask. Party should have planned better for the wildfire season

In a press conference Wednesday, the Saskatchewan NDP are wanting answers from Premer Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party government about why they say, the Sask. Party hid that many of the province’s aircrafts meant to fight wildfires were grounded.

Separatists launch town halls in Saskatchewan

In a news conference today, Saskatchewan NDP discussed how Premier Scott Moe refused to hold a vote on keeping Saskatchewan in Canada, and now fifteen town halls promoting separatism are scheduled leading up until the end of June. The first one set for this weekend is in Saskatoon, according to the Unified Grassroots leader, Nadine Ness.
