Canadian snowbird reflects on time in U.S. during high tensions, strong messaging

Although it seems that the Great White North may be out of the crosshairs for the moment as the Trump administration expands its tariff talks from Canada and Mexico to a large portion of the rest of the world, the past few months have been marked by high tensions, high anxiety, and plenty of uncertainty.

Mr. Giesbrecht's Grade 1/2 class is the March Classroom of the Month!

Our thanks to Southwood School for having us to celebrate the March Classroom of the Month! Spring break meant we had to go a week late, but the kids were pumped to have us!

A special shout-out to the amazing students in Mr. Giesbrecht's grade 1/2 class who were so much fun, and had some great interviews.

We really loved the entry we got from a parent of one of the students:

"Mr Giesbrecht runs a wonderful class. Kids respect him. He is always willing to make connections with everyone."

Pure Anada fire contained thanks to quick response from Morden Fire and Rescue

A quick response from Morden Fire and Rescue prevented what could have been a much more serious fire at Pure Anada, a local business in downtown Morden, Friday (April 11).

According to Fire Chief Andy Thiessen, the blaze broke out in the back of the store while a liquid was being heated on the stovetop. “The liquid they were warming up caught on fire and burned up into the hood over the stove,” Thiessen explained. “From there, it started to burn into the wall and was beginning to move up toward the attic.”

Spring temperatures this weekend but snow possible by Monday

Southern Manitoba is getting a spring preview this weekend, with sunshine and mild temperatures expected through Saturday — but rain, wind and even a touch of snow could return by Sunday night.

Stephen Berg, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the warm-up is thanks to a front that moved in from the west.

It's something Altona Police Chief Dan Defer says his department deals with every election.

On Thursday, the office received a report of two election signs being damaged, rather, noted Defer, they were driven over.

"There are those individuals out there that tend to go out and either remove or destroy election signs," he explained.

Defer noted, destroying, tampering or damaging election signs is an offence under the Federal Elections Act and says these incidents will be investigated by police.

Flyers swept out of MJHL playoffs

There will be a new champion of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League as the defending Turnbull Cup champs, the Winkler Flyers, were ousted in a series sweep by the Northern Manitoba Blizzard, losing game four 2-1 in overtime.

It was a struggle to find offense throughout the series for Winkler and that continued into the first period of game four.

The Blizzard came out strong and both teams went back and forth, but neither could find the back of the net. Shots were listed as 10=5 for the Blizzard but it remained 0-0 heading into the first intermission.
