Chief Ryan Hunt’s safety reminders after the first week of school

As a large portion of the community settles back into the familiar routine of a new school year, it’s good to refresh one’s memory about safety protocols that are well-known, but perhaps forgotten over the summer. 

One such safety precaution to keep in mind is the reduced speed limit in school zones. Chief Ryan Hunt of the Winkler Police Service says that this is an area of concern for officers.  

Enns siblings host lemonade-stand to honour their grandma, a three-time cancer survivor  

Oakley and Aria Enns took time out of their last days of summer to hold a lemonade stand with proceeds going towards South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR).  

Oakley shared some of the details.  

"We had it a few weeks ago. We sold lemonade and cookies and then we were going to bring the money to South Central Cancer Care." 

Steven Wiebe to head up BLSD board leadership team

Fostering positive and frank discussions is a tradition that Steven Wiebe says he intends to continue in his new role as Chair of the Border Land School Division (BLSD) board of trustees.
    
The veteran trustee was elected to head up the group for the first time at its September meeting after Patty Wiebe completed her two-year term in the post. Having witnessed some great leadership by his predecessors, Wiebe felt he had something to contribute to the position.

Girl, 15, lit on fire at Saskatoon high school, staff injured trying to help

A 15-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after she was lit on fire at a Saskatoon high school, police said Thursday. 

Sgt. Ken Kane told reporters that a school resource officer, who was at Evan Hardy Collegiate for a different matter, apprehended a 14-year-old girl as a suspect.

He did not say how the victim was lit on fire or the extent of her burn injuries. 

"Our officer that was on scene was at the immediate area of the event within 30 seconds and had someone in custody within 60 seconds," he said.

Blaus gaut: Farm Fest Music Fundraiser to help preserve low German music

This weekend, the community will gather for uplifting music for the whole family with a humble prairie background, and much of it will happen in Plautdietsch (low German).

David Toews is from Paraguay, and Ron Giesbrecht is from Plum Coulee. They are both involved with the Farm Fest Music Festival Fundraiser in support of David Toews Ministry.  

Morden man charged after drug trafficking investigation search warrant executed

A 19 year old Morden man has been charged with a variety of drug and weapons related offences after a search warrant was executed Labour Day Monday.

According to a news release issued by Morden Police, on Monday, as part of an ongoing investigation, officers along with the Regional Support Tactical Team, executed the search warrant at a residence in the city. Once inside, police found the suspect, arrested him and transported him to the Morden Police Service building.
