A lost giant balloon, mud, and triumph: School project turns adventure
One moment, the young members of St. John’s-Ravenscourt School’s High Altitude Balloon Club were releasing their student-designed balloon in MacGregor.
The next — after losing the signal for the balloon and then suddenly recovering it again — they were abandoning their bus on a muddy road in the countryside, rushing to retrieve it.
The students weren’t the only ones who made an impressive journey.

Revamp coming for Canada’s national pig code
Canada’s Code of Practice for Care and Handling of Pigs is up for review, a process expected to be compete by 2028
Canada’s national pig code is getting an update.
‘We’ve launched the code of practice with the National Farm Animal Care Council,” said Stephen Heckbert, executive director of the Canadian Pork Council.
The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs will be guided by the development process set out by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), the spearheading body for Canada’s various livestock codes.
Evacuation centre at Meridian Exhibition Centre no longer needed, Winkler thanked for emergency readiness
The City of Winkler has shut down its evacuation centre at the Meridian Exhibition Centre after receiving word from the Canadian Red Cross last week that the facility would no longer be required.
City Manager Jody Penner confirmed that the facility was cleaned and reopened to the public on June 11.
“That's right. On June 11th, we reopened after we were able to clean up the cots and all the other supplies and everything and get back to normal operation,” said Penner.

Lorine Hiebert, 92, of Rosenort passed away Friday, June 13th at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She is survived by 3 daughters, 3 sons, 1 sister, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, 1 brother, 1 brother-in-law, and 4 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Lorine Hiebert will be held Wednesday, June 18th at 10:30am at Rosenort Church of God in Christ Mennonite with burial at the church cemetery.
RCMP say no major injuries in collision east of Carman
According to information from the RCMP, there appeared not to be any major injuries after a two vehicle collision Monday afternoon east of Carman.
Carman RCMP received the report around 4:15pm, with the scene located at Highway 3 and Road 19 West.
The investigation revealed a vehicle driven by a 34-year-old male was headed east on Highway 3 toward Winnipeg when an oncoming vehicle veered into his lane.
RCMP say the oncoming driver, a 44-year old male from Morden, will likely be facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
Altona police investigate stolen firearm
Altona police are investigating after someone in Plum Coulee had their firearm stolen on Sunday.
"It's still preliminary, but the vehicle was parked at a residence, the firearm had been left in the backseat of a pickup truck. It was covered and there was a trigger lock, but it had been left unattended in the back of the vehicle and the owner noticed it was gone when he returned," explained Police Chief Dan Defer.
Not only are police investigating the theft of the firearm, but also how it was stored.
Case of Bovine TB found in animal from the Pembina Valley
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched an investigation into a case of bovine tuberculosis in an animal originating from the Pembina Valley in Manitoba. It was slaughtered at a federally registered abattoir in Manitoba.
According to the CFIA, Bovine TB is a reportable disease in Canada and has been subject to a mandatory national eradication program since 1923. While all areas of Canada are considered to be officially free of bovine TB today, isolated cases in cattle may occur.
