NPC philanthropists give out nearly $4,000 with Winkler Community Foundation
Northland Parkway Collegiate’s Youth in Philanthropy wrapped up a year of meaningful community involvement through the program. Members said that the group, which has the students fundraise and donate to local charitable organizations, was both a rewarding challenge and an insightful look into the world of nonprofit work.
“It is quite a lot of work, but it is really fun. We enjoy the process, and doing it with friends makes it much better,” said student Alsu Iktislyamova.

Winkler Councillor Marvin Plett recognized for service at national and provincial levels
Longtime Winkler city councillor Marvin Plett was recently recognized by both the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for his dedicated service to municipal government.
“I just received an award from the Association of Manitoba Municipalities for 25 years of service on council,” said Plett in an interview. In addition to that milestone, he has received recognition for serving on the FCM Board for 15 consecutive years, having been elected annually by Manitoba municipal delegates.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew tours wildfire zones by air as 21,000 remain out of homes
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew took to the air Thursday, touring and meeting with those dealing with scores of wildfires in his province, while in Saskatchewan thousands of fire evacuees were given the green light to go home.
“Just this morning, the premier was in Flin Flon meeting with the firefighters, the boots on the ground, including our American firefighters that are up there,” Natural Resources Minister Ian Bushie told a wildfire update news conference.

Physiological Leaf Spot is suspected in a number of winter wheat fields in Southern Alberta.
Physiological leaf spot (PLS) appears as round or oval lesions that may be yellow or bleached white to gray in color. Lesions may also have a dark center with a narrow chlorotic (yellow) halos and tend to be more numerous toward the tip of the leaf blade. PLS lesions are often found in the upper canopy, and missing or rare on lower leaves.

The Canadian citizen believed to be on an Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff is a dentist from Mississauga, Ont., her family has confirmed.
The husband of Nirali Sureshkumar Patel said she was on board the London-bound flight that crashed Thursday, killing at least 240 people.
Patel's dental clinic referred The Canadian Press to the husband, who said that he was in the process of booking travel to India for himself and the couple's one-year-old child.

Now, after four decades of serving and shaping the community, Chief Neduzak has announced his retirement.
