Reduced visibility to continue Saturday with light snow and breezy conditions

Travel Saturday morning, and potentially into the afternoon hours, will be impacted by reduce visibility in blowing snow across the Pembina and Red River Valley.

"The combination of snowfall coming from a trough of low pressure and strong wind gusts throughout the region have led to this morning's conditions," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "The light snow is expected throughout the day, with northwesterly gusts of 50 km/h, or a little more, likely into the late afternoon hours before diminishing Saturday evening."

Police make arrests in Grandparent Scam; victims getting some of their money back

Our provincial government is returning some of the money that was stolen from vulnerable seniors through what is referred to as the Grandparent Scam.

Over the course of 10 days in July 2022, two Ontario residents were able to scam 14 Manitobans, stealing a total of $145,000 through this scam. The province says a typical scam involves someone researching potential victims by reviewing obituaries and Internet searches and then calling the victim posing as a grandchild in legal trouble. The scammer says they have been arrested by police and need cash in order to be released.

Small brake fire on grain truck briefly backs up traffic near BTHC

A small brake fire on a grain truck lead to traffic being backed up for a period of time Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Highway 14 and 3 near Boundary Trails Health Centre.

Winkler Fire Department was called out just before 2 p.m., and Chief Richard Paetzold indicated they found the brakes on had locked, causing a small fire. 

Two vehicle collision involving a house, sends one person to hospital Monday afternoon

One person was transported to hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Winkler Monday afternoon.
    
The accident also caused minor damage to a house.
    
Winkler Police and EMS were called to the scene at the corner of Pineview Drive and Pembina Avenue just after 1:30 pm.
 

Highways remain snow covered, packed and icy

The low pressure system which began impacting the region yesterday continues to pull eastward out of the region, with breezy conditions expected to last much of the day.

According to Manitoba Transportation all highways throughout the Pembina and Red River Valleys remain partly snow covered, snow packed and/or ice covered with visibility much improved since the early morning hours.

Summer vacation is over, Winter returns Friday with Snowfall Warning issued

After, give or take, 10 to 14 days of above average temperatures across Southern Manitoba, punctuated by another beautiful December day Thursday, Old Man Winter will try to make a comeback Friday and spoil our Summer Vacation.

“It’s quite likely more daytime high records will have been set on Thursday, with temperatures again reaching 8 to nearly 10 degrees in areas near the U.S. border,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “That would be the second consecutive day where highs were nearly 15 degrees above average for this time of year.”

November showers bring December... late season Rainwatcher reports from Sunday

An Alberta clipper moving through the province yesterday tapped into Pacific moisture drawn over the area, leading to showers throughout much of Sunday.

"Freezing drizzle was reported in some areas in the early morning hours, but by mid-morning had switched over to just rain," said CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "Our Rainwatchers have indicated those light showers led to accumulating rainfall over the last twenty-four hours."

Picketing continues in Winkler after Manitoba Public Insurance workers reject latest offer

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) workers have voted overwhelmingly against their employer's latest offer, extending the province-wide strike that began on August 28th, and involved approximately 1,700 workers at the Crown Corporation. The walkout has affected services such as damage claims and driver road tests.

The latest offer by MPI included raises totalling 12.2 per cent over four years.

Monday marked the start of the 10th week of strike action, making it one of the lengthiest in the history of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU).
