School tax increases raise questions about Manitoba's property tax changes

Recent increases in school taxes have put a dent in the Manitoba government’s estimate of how many homeowners are better off under its new tax-credit system.

"We have seen some unexpectedly high increases from school divisions," Finance Minister Adrien Sala said in an interview.

Manitoba goaltender Raygan Kirk has had a terrific season with the PWHL's Toronto Sceptres and the rookie has enjoyed every moment of being a professional hockey player.

Coming out of college, Kirk admits that getting used to the schedule has been a lot of fun but it has taken some time to get accustomed to it all. "It's been a lot of fun so far, it's flown, it's crazy to think playoffs start in May, but it's been a lot of fun but I really can't get over just how fast it's all flown by."

City supports more multifamily homes in Steinbach

The City of Steinbach is working to make housing more affordable by allowing more apartment buildings and multi-unity homes to be built through rezoning decisions.

At a recent city council meeting, Mayor Earl Funk suggested that it could work well for Steinbach to grow outward as well as upward. Constructing taller buildings to make better use of land while also encouraging more development toward the outer areas of the city.

High school students to compete in "Envirothon" at Tourond Creek

For the first time, the Seine Rat Roseau Watershed District (SRRWD) is hosting the East Regional Manitoba Envirothon. 

"The Envirothon is a hands-on education competition for high school students," says Alex Wolf, a watershed technician at the SRRWD. 

She says the day starts off with a learning session, where teams learn about different tools they'll need to use at trail stops through the day.

Blumenort leading the southeast in charitable donations

Residents of southeastern Manitoba continue to donate more money to charity than either the provincial or national average. That is according to recently released data from Statistics Canada.

Statistics Canada has now released figures from the 2023 tax year. The median donation per tax filer in Canada that year was $390 and for Manitoba, it was $600. Both those averages are up from 2022. The median donation amount represents the middle point: half of the donors gave more than the median and the other half gave less.

Poilievre promises tougher ethics rules, takes aim at Carney's assets

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising to tighten financial transparency rules for elected officials — and is using that promise to take aim at Liberal Leader Mark Carney.

Poilievre told a press conference in Ottawa on Sunday that if his party forms government, he'll ban what he calls "shadow lobbying."

Poilievre pledges veterans' supports; Carney offers cheaper access to parks, museums

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to cut red tape and step up support for veterans Saturday, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney pledged to make visiting national parks and museums more affordable for Canadian families.

Poilievre unveiled his party's plan for veterans during a press conference in Nepean, the suburban Ottawa community that contains the neighbouring ridings where he and Carney are running. 

Carney did not have any public events scheduled. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's itinerary shows he will hold an evening event in Timmins, Ont.

City says mowing matters as weed bylaw takes effect

As the weather warms and lawns begin to green, the City of Steinbach is reminding residents to keep weeds under control — or risk facing fines or fees. 

Each spring, the City designates its bylaw officer as the official noxious weeds inspector. Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says while most Steinbach property owners maintain their yards well, there are rules in place to ensure everyone does their part to prevent unsightly overgrowth.
