Swift Current landowner claims well leak has been made worse

A Swift Current land owner is claiming an abandoned well site and gas leak, which was supposed to have been fixed, is now in worse shape.

The site, located just outside of Swift Current city limits, across the road from the Pioneer grain elevator, is owned by Johanna Lee. She recently hired a private inspector to check on the leak after Taqa North had crews working to repair it in late May and early June.

Lee says that the repair, which saw an entire drill crew re-drill the well to implement a fix and determine the cause of the leak, is now leaking more than before.

Saskatchewan still seeing stable gas prices amidst global tensions

While much of Canada is experiencing an increase in gas prices, Saskatchewan currently have one of the lowest rates of gas prices in the country.

According to GasBuddy, Saskatchewan's average is currently sitting at $1.337 per litre, while other locations in Canada have already seen an increase of five to eight cents per litre.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis with GasBuddy, noted Saskatchewan hasn't seen much change in gas prices, but are likely to at some point soon.

Cabri vehicles rummaged through, cash stolen and RCMP investigating

Cabri residents are dealing with the aftereffects of their vehicles being broken into. 

Swift Current Rural RRCMP is investigating a host of vehicles being rummaged through in the community. This incident occurred on the night between June 10 and 11. 

Security footage from a camera shows the culprit wearing a black cap, a red face covering, possibly a bandana, and a black outfit. 

Items stolen include multiple mail keys and cash. 

Gull Lake firefighters back home after helping up north

A troop of firefighters have returned to Gull Lake after spending a week assisting in northern Saskatchewan.

The Gull Lake Fire & Rescue team is happy to welcome back Stacy Schmidt, Kara Dyer, Kyle Rozel, and Tim Temoshawsky. These four members were stationed near Pelican Narrows, having arrived in the community on Tuesday, June 3. They came back home on Saturday, June 7. 

According to Gull Lake Fire & Rescue Fire Chief, Bentley Gibson, the most intense fire they experienced was on the drive in. 

Landmark motel near Maple Creek burns down

The Prairie Pride Motel, located at the junction of Highway 21 and the Trans-Canada Highway, burned down on Tuesday night. 

Maple Creek Mayor Michelle McKenzie reports that the fire occurred late in the evening. No injuries have been reported from this incident. 

McKenzie applauded the hard work and response from the RM of Maple Creek Fire Department. 

Ministry shares info about broken cable at Riverhurst Ferry

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways has shared some additional information on the recent breakdowns at the Riverhurst Ferry. 

Back on May 17, staff at the Ferry noticed an issue with the underwater cable, a single day after it opened for the season. This issue required the cable to be replaced. However, due to fraying, the cable got stuck on the bottom of Lake Diefenbaker. 

Business robbed in Swift Current

Swift Current Municipal RCMP is searching for the culprit behind a robbery in Swift Current.

The man entered a business on the 300 block of Central Avenue North, dressed in a black mask, sunglasses, a black hoodie with stripes on the arms, black pants, and black gloves with skulls on them. 

The individual is described as somewhere between 5'6" and 5'9", with a thin build. 

Upon entry into the business, he demanded cash from an employee. After obtaining an undisclosed amount, he proceeded to vacate the building on foot. 

Drunk driver crashes into RCMP in Swift Current

A Swift Current Municipal RCMP member was parked when his cruiser was struck by a drunk driver. 
 
The incident occurred on Friesen Street on Wednesday, at a low speed. The driver struck the RCMP cruiser head-on. Both vehicles suffered front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene. 

The male driver of the vehicle was arrested for the incident and subsequently failed a breathalyzer test. 

Tyler White faces two charges for operation while impaired, and operation while over 80mg per cent.

Wayne Cormier wins tenth national championship in powerlifting

A Swift Current-based powerlifting legend, formerly from Moose Jaw, has claimed his 10th National Championship and set a new record.

Wayne Cormier, a Hall of Fame powerlifter, won his 10th National gold medal on May 11 after a four-and-a-half-year hiatus. He claimed victory with a record-setting 270 lbs benchpress, breaking the previous Masters Five record of 264 lbs.
