Community raises $30k for Kenora’s Dave Blake

Almost $30,000 has been raised for Kenora’s Dave Blake.

A GoFundMe campaign for the co-owner of the Greek Monster Cafe in Beaver Brae and St. Thomas Aquinas and the former Entertainment Director of Harbourfest has reached nearly $30,000 in just over a month, to support Dave’s recovery journey.

Blake also recently received a $500 bonus by winning Riverside Foundation for Health Care’s Early Bird 50/50 contest, courtesy of West End Motors and Westland Insurance.

Three new paramedicine vehicles have made their way to the area as part of the provincial program to provide seniors with better at-home care.  

The provincial government announced in early February that they are focusing on making sure seniors get easier access to care while staying in their homes.  

Toxic algae reported at four area lakes

The Northwestern Health Unit and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks are working together to test four lakes in northwestern Ontario for toxic blue-green algae.

Residents are asked to avoid Pelican Lake, Abram Lake and Minnitaki Lake near Sioux Lookout, as well as Wabigoon Lake in Dryden near the Eagle’s Landing Golf Course for the time being, and are asked to treat the algae as if it is toxic.

Blue-green algae is created through phosphorus in the lakes, and blue-green algae typically blooms in the summer and fall in shallow, slow-moving and warm water.

July 19 Sports Update

In Kenora Slo Pitch Action, the Centuries beat Custom Drilling 17 to 8. Moncrief Construction dug up 10 runs in the 7th inning to beat the Brewco Brewers 20 to 15. Kenora DJ Services took out the No Frills Strykers 13 to 5, and Northern Harbour defeated the Riverview Rebels 32 to 9.

The tall tale of NWO’s travelling goat: Goaty

The story of northwestern Ontario’s travelling goat is only just beginning.

We tuned into the story after a post to Kenora’s ever-popular Kenora Rant N Rave Facebook group, but Goaty’s story ran much deeper than we ever expected. Here’s what we know:

Rainfall warning issued for NWO

A rainfall warning’s in effect for northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada warns that heavy rain is expected to begin Tuesday morning and will continue into Tuesday night, with up to 60 mm possible by Wednesday morning.

Meteorologists warn the heavy downpours are expected to be associated with severe thunderstorms as well, which are expected to taper off by Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada reminds residents to seek shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Deer Lake Man arrested and charged following a suspicious death

One person was arrested and charged in Deer Lake First Nation following a suspicious death. 

Shortly after 2:00 am on July 16, 2022, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to a call of a person in medical distress at a residence on Nursing Station Road.

Officers located a deceased adult male inside the home.  

Major damage reported from Sunday’s severe storm

Hydro workers and emergency responders are still cleaning up after Sunday night’s severe thunderstorm in northwestern Ontario, with high winds, heavy downpours and reports of tornado activity near Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

Members of the Kenora OPP and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire and Rescue were on the scene of Caliper Lake Provincial Park after multiple trees fell on campers and vehicles and blocked roadways after the storm.

Here & Now Theatre to perform free family shows

Here & Now Theatre Arts Collective is bringing a string of shows for families to enjoy at no cost this week. 

"They can expect a really fun interactive show. There will be puppets, glow sticks and really crazy and fun story telling about Kenora to Kenora residents and tourists," says co-creator of Here & Now, Jade Benoit.
