Alberta teachers vote 95 per cent in favour of strike action as talks continue

The union representing Alberta teachers says members have voted 95 per cent in favour of strike action and they could hit the picket lines in the next four months.

Alberta Teachers' Association president Jason Schilling says teachers are sending a message that they are united and will no longer prop up an underfunded public education system.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says a mediator's recommendation rejected by teachers included the same 12 per cent pay increase over four years that has already been accepted by other unions.

Premier Smith visits rural Alberta to lend voice to local byelection candidate

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is winning applause but also facing pointed questions from party members ahead of three byelections.

Smith, in her role as United Conservative leader, appeared at a town hall meeting attended by about 300 in Three Hills Monday.

She came with Tara Sawyer, who is running under the party banner in the June 23 byelection in the area.

The RCMP’s Musical Ride saddles up to tour across Alberta this summer

The RCMP’s Musical Ride, an iconic Canadian spectacle recognized at home and abroad, and a symbol of tradition, honour, and pride, will be trotting across Alberta this summer. Spectators can expect to be wowed as the Musical Ride troop, made up of up to 32 RCMP officers and their horses, perform intricate formations and drills set to music at shows in a community near you!

RCMP request “Please lock your vehicle”

On Monday, June 9, 2025, the Fort St John RCMP received 7 reports of vehicles being rummaged through after they were left unlocked overnight. Frontline police officers conducted a door-to-door canvass to try to get video surveillance as well as to determine if additional vehicles were entered. Additional files may be created as a result of the canvass.

The Fort St John RCMP want to remind the public that locking their vehicles while unattended is the easiest way to protect your vehicle and your belongings.

Grande Prairie RCMP GIS conducts arrest in child luring investigation

In April 2025, Grande Prairie RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) received information through INTERPOL regarding a male in Grande Prairie, Alta., who was luring children online into sending him intimate images. On June 9, 2025, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Grande Prairie, resulting in the seizure of multiple electronic devices and a firearm. An arrest was also made.

As a result of the investigation, Isaac Thomas Emson (19), a resident of Grande Prairie, was charged with:

Government failed to follow procurement, security rules with ArriveCan contractor

Federal organizations failed to follow procurement and security rules when awarding contracts to the company behind the controversial ArriveCan app, the auditor general said Tuesday.

The report on GCStrategies — one of several audits tabled in the House of Commons on Tuesday — says the company was awarded 106 contracts by 31 federal organizations between 2015 and 2024.

The maximum value of those contracts was more than $90 million but only $65 million was paid out.

UPDATE: Kiskatinaw Wildfire Evacuation Order and Alert expanded

UPDATE: June 11, 2025

Overnight conditions reduced fire activity, but heavy smoke limited visibility, impacting planned operations. Today, progress continues on the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire as weather conditions are expected to improve. 

The size of the wildfire is 21,679 hectares. The evacuation order and alert issued by the County of Grande Prairie remain in effect.

UPDATE: Saddle Hills County EXPANDS EVACUATION ORDER due to Blueberry Mountain wildfire

UPDATE: June 11, 2025

Overnight the wildfire crossed into the west side of the Moonshine Lake Provincial Park boundaries. The Savanna Fire Department is standing by, ready to protect structures. The County of Saddle Hills is constructing a fire guard between the wildfire and Moonshine Lake in coordination with Alberta Parks. Blueberry and Happy Valley fire departments are also supporting firefighting operations in the area.

Renewable cleanup rules making Alberta less competitive for investment: report

A report says new cleanup rules for renewable energy sites are hurting the competitiveness of Alberta's industry.

Business Renewables Centre-Canada analyzed the reclamation security requirements for renewables in 27 jurisdictions and found Alberta's are now the most costly. 

Under a code of practice for solar and wind projects published last week, the Alberta government says operators must provide an estimate for the cost of dismantling turbines and panels, removing underground concrete infrastructure, hauling waste away, replanting vegetation and other items.
