Tastaskweyak Cree Nation cleared to return after wildfire threat

More wildfire evacuees are heading home. 

As of 6:45 p.m. on Monday, the mandatory fire evacuation for Tastaskweyak Cree Nation was lifted. 

Officials in the community say the fire has been contained and there is only one area of concern left. 

The water treatment plant was back up and running on Sunday, and Manitoba Hydro crews will start working on damaged poles in the area beginning on June 18.

Pedestrian killed in early morning collision on Highway 1 near Headingley

A 67-year-old man is dead after being struck by a pickup truck early Tuesday morning on Highway 1 near McGuckin Road in Headingley.

The collision occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, prompting a response from Headingley RCMP, Emergency Medical Services, and the local fire department.

RCMP say the pedestrian, described as a transient male, was walking along the highway when he was hit by a westbound pickup truck.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was not injured.

Border bill raises questions about expanded data sharing with U.S.: Citizen Lab

An organization that monitors the effect of information flows on human rights says the new federal border security bill appears to "roll out a welcome mat" for expanded data-sharing agreements with the United States and other countries.

Researchers with The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto say they want the federal government to reveal more about the information-sharing implications of the bill due to a possible risk to human rights.

Canada is hosting the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has two days of meetings scheduled with world leaders, with discussion topics likely to include trade, the war in Ukraine and conflict in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office says U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to have a deal on a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S. by mid-July.

South Perimeter closed after multi-vehicle collision

RCMP are asking motorists to avoid a section of the Perimeter Highway following a multi-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon. 

The collision is impacting the Perimeter Highway at the Portage Avenue overpass, in the southbound direction. All traffic is being diverted. 

RCMP officers from Stonewall and Headingley are on the scene, as well as Traffic Service members.

There will be significant delays so motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.

There are no words on what caused the collision or any injuries.

Rain, cooler temperatures provide relief in Prairie wildfires, more evacuees go home

Rain and cooler temperatures brought relief to fire-ravaged Manitoba and Saskatchewan Monday, allowing fire bans to be reduced and more evacuees to go home.

The weather helped fire crews get an upper hand in parts of northern Manitoba to clear the way for some of the 21,000 or more evacuees to start returning home.

David Monias, chief of Pimicikamak Cree Nation, reposted video of heavy rainfall on social media along with video of small planes leaving Winnipeg with evacuees who were forced out almost three weeks earlier.

Sleeping transit rider assaults two Transit supervisors over weekend

A 23-year-old male is in custody after assaulting Transit Supervisors over the weekend. 

On June 14 at 5:34 p.m., two Winnipeg Transit supervisors were assaulted while checking on the well-being of a transit rider in the area of Fort Street and Graham Avenue. When Central District patrol officers arrived, the suspect was still struggling with the Transit Supervisors. He was taken into custody.

Re-entry plans are underway for Flin Flon as wildfire conditions near the community improve.

Critical businesses have already started returning to the city to clean, restock and ensure everything is in place. 

The closest area of concern that may do damage to the community is near the Mandy Mine and Channing area, according to Flin Flon Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk.
