Sea Bears sign five players to protected list
The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have retained the first right to negotiate with five members of its 2024 team for the 2025 season.
In the CEBL, all players are on single-season contracts, which means every club must sign its full roster each Spring. Free agency for the 2025 season begins Feb. 1. Each club is granted the right to negotiate with players on their protected list from now until Mar. 1 without interference from other CEBL teams.

Firefighter injured in fire at troubled vacant apartment building
A fire broke out at a vacant three-storey apartment building in the 500 block of Balmoral Street on Wednesday night, marking the latest in a series of incidents at the site.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to the blaze at 7:39 p.m., with smoke visible from the building upon their arrival, according to a media release from the City of Winnipeg.

44 residents displaced after fire triggers evacuation at Winnipeg apartment building
Dozens of residents of a Winnipeg apartment building have been displaced after a fire broke out late Wednesday morning.
At 11:36 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a two-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Ross Avenue. Crews arrived to find smoke in the building, but the sprinkler system had already activated, suppressing the fire before it spread further.
Water damage from the sprinklers forced the evacuation of the building. Firefighters helped some residents leave, while others were able to exit on their own.
Osborne Bridge to be closed for work on Thursday
The City of Winnipeg is giving motorists a heads-up that a busy roadway will be closed for much of the day, today.
In an online post, the City says that the Osborne Bridge will be closed in all directions between Granite Way and Osborne Street on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Construction taking place on the bridge is responsible for the closure.
The City says that lanes in both directions will be opened for the morning and afternoon rush hours, but otherwise to expect complete closures throughout the day.

Car drives through crowd of protesters at Portage and Main
Witnesses say that a vehicle drove through a crowd of protesters striking some of them on Wednesday in Winnipeg.
A group of protesters had gathered at Portage Avenue and Main Street to demonstrate after the Winnipeg Police Service announced on Tuesday that officers had struck and killed a woman with a vehicle at a homeless encampment. Officers were providing a ride home to a person who lives in the encampment in Fort Rouge Park off of River Avenue when the collision occurred. The victim was a woman in her 30s, police say.
NDP pulling out of supply and confidence deal with Liberals
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has ripped up the supply and confidence deal with the Liberals that helped keep the minority government in power.
In a social media video posted Wednesday afternoon, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he notified Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the decision.
"Canadians are fighting a battle. A battle for the future of the middle class. Justin Trudeau has proven again and again he will always cave to corporate greed," Singh said in the video directly addressing Canadians.
