The Manitoba government has signed a $30-million contract with the Canadian Red Cross for evacuee support and other services related to this year's wildfires.
The recently disclosed contract is worth more than half the province's total annual budget for emergency services and provides a first glimpse into the cost of the Manitoba's worst wildfire season in at least 30 years.
"We know that we need to continue providing supports to Manitobans who are facing evacuations and are continuing to need support," Finance Minister Adrien Sala said in an interview Tuesday.

Air Canada flights within North America are expected to ramp up this morning as the airline continues its operational restart following a three-day flight attendants' strike.
The company resumed flights Tuesday afternoon after a complete halt to Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge routes that began early Saturday morning.
It said it was focusing on outbound international flights to start.
Several Downtown streets closed for CEBL championship weekend beginning Thursday
A number of streets Downtown Winnipeg will be closed to accommodate the Canadian Elite Basketball League championship weekend celebrations.
The changes begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 21 and will remain in place until noon on Monday, August 25.

Woman escapes after random late-night assault near Beliveau Road
The Winnipeg Police Service is searching for a suspect and asking for the public's assistance after a woman was assaulted near Beliveau Road last week.
Shortly before midnight, at 11:45 p.m. on August 15, a woman was walking between a parking lot in the 1900 block of Abinoji Mikanah and the rear of the 200 block of Beliveau Road.
A random stranger appeared and grabbed the woman in an unwanted sexual manner.
The woman broke free and ran to safety.
The suspect was last seen running east toward the Home Depot parking lot.
Five Winnipeg neighbourhoods to see new supportive housing units
The City of Winnipeg is taking additional steps to help in the fight against homelessness.
Along with the Province of Manitoba and non-profit partners, five new supportive housing residences are coming to the City.
“Supportive housing is a proven, effective tool in reducing homelessness, with long-term benefits for residents and neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a news release.
Outdoor aquatic season extended in Winnipeg
Winnipeggers will be able to cool off a bit longer than originally planned, as the spray pad season has been extended by one week.
Until the end-of-day on September 7, 2025, most City-owned spray pads are planned to remain open. Boyd Park and Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre will be open until end-of-day Monday, September 1, 2025.
Most of the City’s wading pools are planned to remain open until August 22 with others open until August 31, 2025. The following four wading pools are planned to remain open until end-of-day Monday, September 1, 2025:
2 people recovering after serious crash near Deacon’s Corner
Two people are recovering following a serious collision over the weekend.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Oakbank RCMP were called to a serious collision on Provincial Road 207, near Highway 1, at Deacon’s corner.
At the scene, officers located a 4-door sedan on the southbound shoulder, facing south, with extensive front-end damage. A semi truck, with no trailer attached, was parked ahead and had a warped frame.
Multiple cats rescued from Tyndall Park home fire
Multiple cats were rescued by fire crews early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out at a home in Tyndall Park.
At 3:43 a.m. on August 19, the WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm in a single-family bungalow on Brophy Avenue.
Crews arrived on the scene to smoke coming from the house and entered the fight the blaze from the interior.
The fire was declared under control at 4:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported as all occupants safely evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters were able to locate and rescue multiple cats from the residence.
