Mary Poppins lands in Winnipeg: timeless musical returns to Rainbow Stage ▶️

Audiences won’t need a spoonful of sugar to make Rainbow Stage’s next production any more appealing.  

Expect a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious show when Mary Poppins makes her return to the iconic domed theatre in Kildonan Park.  

“(Mary Poppins) returns when you need her most,” says Rainbow Stage Artistic Director Carson Nattrass.    

Last staged over a decade ago, the production starring everyone’s favourite nanny serves as the ideal foil to the first-ever world-premiere that kicked off the 70th anniversary Rainbow Stage season, according to Nattrass.  

Man stabbed on transit bus during afternoon rush hour

A man is recovering in hospital after being stabbed on a Winnipeg Transit bus early Tuesday evening. 

Winnipeg police say the victim, a man in his 30s, was stabbed during an unprovoked altercation with a male and female suspect on a bus near Main Street and Selkirk Avenue at around 5 p.m. yesterday. 

The man was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable. 

There is no word on the description of either suspect. The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is working to learn more about the suspects.

Winnipeg-based organization supporting people living with intellectual disabilities celebrates major milestone

A Winnipeg-based organization supporting people living with intellectual disabilities celebrated a special milestone this week. 

DASCH Foundation, a non-profit organization and foundation that supports children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities by providing safe, inclusive community housing, celebrated 50 years with a community barbecue, cultural displays and games on Tuesday. 

'It brings me great joy': Winnipeg mom collects backpacks for families in need

A Winnipeg mother has taken a difficult situation and is now using it to help others.  

Cristine Stacey, a domestic abuse survivor and single mother of two young girls spends her time helping provide necessities to families in need. 

From clothing drives to backpack drives, Stacey has found a way to give back and get the community involved. 

Over 50 volunteers take part in Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build in Transcona

Over 50 volunteers are participating in a special Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity this week in Winnipeg. 

It's part of the 2024 General Volunteer build which started Tuesday and will continue through Friday. 

"The build site was buzzing with energy as these amazing volunteers came together to make a difference," said Habitat for Humanity in a statement on social media. "We’re building more than just homes—we’re building memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Stay tuned for more updates throughout this exciting week!"

Goldeyes alone in top spot after seventh inning outburst

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (47-35) scored six times in the seventh inning to snap a 6-6 tie and went on to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 13-6 at Blue Cross Park Tuesday evening. The Goldeyes now sit alone atop the West Division standings, one game better than the Canaries. The last time Winnipeg was in sole possession of first place this late in the season was August 23, 2020.

'They crossed the line': Crown in closing arguments for 'Freedom Convoy' organizers

Two prominent "Freedom Convoy" organizers "crossed the line" into criminal activity when they led a massive demonstration to Ottawa in 2022 and refused to leave, the Crown said in its final submissions on their criminal trial Tuesday.

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were among several organizers who brought a huge number of demonstrators and big-rig trucks to Ottawa two years ago to protest pandemic-era public health restrictions and vaccine mandates.

Canadian Olympians return home after record-setting Summer Games

The arrival terminals at airports in Toronto and Montreal were filled with cheers on Monday as fans and family gathered to give a hero’s welcome to Canadian Olympians returning home from the Paris Games with a record-breaking medal haul. 

The Summer Games saw Team Canada bring home an unprecedented number of medals — nine gold and 27 in total. Both were records for Canada at a non-boycotted Summer Olympics, surpassing previous highs set in Tokyo three years ago and 1992 in Barcelona.

'New normal': Jasper wildfire evacuees can start returning to townsite on Friday

The 5,000 residents of Jasper, Alta., chased out of their homes three weeks ago ahead of a devastating wildfire, can go home Friday.

Officials said essential services have been restored to the point where they can allow a blanket re-entry.

However, utility services could still be hit and miss. Some homes may look fine on the outside but will have sustained heavy smoke or water damage on the inside. Other homes may be fenced off as public safety hazards.
