Pfeifer-Brandt spreads awareness about support available for dementia and Alzheimer's

Meg Pfeifer-Brandt, the South Eastman regional coordinator at Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba believes in the importance of spreading awareness about dementia and diseases such as Alzheimer’s. 

Pfeifer-Brandt notes that dementia and Alzheimer’s are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two. 

Steinbach Rockin' Rollers encourages the community to join in on the fun

Do you have roller skates collecting dust in the corner of your storage room? This is an opportunity to pull them out and skate again.  

Vivian Bott of the Steinbach Rockin’ Rollers says they were seeking ways “to stay active” and saw a need for a space to roller skate.  

The Steinbach Rockin’ Rollers is a group that skates together on Sundays from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre. 

Darryl Janzen talks "a new beginning" six months after the fire on Main

It has been six months since the devastating fire on Main last July. 

Darryl Janzen of Janzen’s Paint says that when he thinks of the store, it “feels like yesterday.”  

“I could just drive down Main Street, I think it's there. I could walk in the front door and I still know where everything should be. My staff would be there, everything is the way it was. The fire itself, even though I still remember that day so well, is starting to feel a little more distant,” 

Phoenix Cheer's nationals dreams and fundraising event this weekend

Two cheer teams from Phoenix Cheer Athletics are heading to Moose Jaw in February.  

Meaghan Boras, the treasurer on the board of directors, explains that to qualify for Nationals happening in Niagara in April, teams must win a bid and punch their ticket in Moose Jaw. Nationals is invite-only, and there are only 30 teams that compete.  

They are taking a youth and junior team with athletes ages 10 to 15.   

"Their hugs held together the broken pieces of me that I haven't been able to heal yet."

Two and a half years ago on August 17, 2020, an accident occurred at the Highway 12 and Provincial Road 210 intersection. For Brianna Seewald, it was just another drive home from a local hospital where she worked. Suddenly, she got into a car accident. Her life changed in the blink of an eye and she was left severely injured and unable to walk. 

Flash forward to now, she has become a more “independent version” of herself.  

Teens and Money workshop teaches youth all things finances

Local realtor Candice Bakx-Friesen is passionate about helping others understand finances. Whether it's individuals, families, or youth, she's happy to help out.

Many parents come to her when it comes to youth and finances. 

“Throughout my career, it's come up time and time again. ‘Hey, can I can I ask you a few questions about money?’” Bakx-Friesen says. “People are sort of struggling with “What do I teach my kids about money? It's sort of a taboo subject, so how do I even start with it?’”

Ukrainian donation drop-off seeking furniture items as more newcomers arrive

As an increasing number of Ukrainian refugee families are settling in southeast Manitoba, more donations are urgently needed. 

Denis Vassart with the Ukrainian Settlement Task Force shares what they are looking for. 

“One of the main things we're short of are mattresses and bed frames, all furniture. But the biggest thing is mattresses,” adding that mattress donations don’t need to be brand new, they just have to be in good order.
