For the August long weekend, Steinbach and the surrounding area celebrated the city's history and those who built it into what it is today.  

Thousands of community members and visitors came through the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) for their three-day Pioneer Days festivities. 

Under the Mennonite Heritage Village’s (MHV) steamer shelter, surrounded by hundreds of classic cars, were two people with a stack of their recently published photographic book. They are on a mission to help solve the mystery of Parkinson’s disease.  

When the pandemic hit, Steve Van Vlaenderen of Winnipeg, who has Parkinson’s, was left wondering how to spend his time. That’s when his partner, Darlene Hildebrand, planted an idea. Years later, the photo book Vanishing Wheels was born.  

The Tolstoi Heritage Centre received $112,370 from the provincial funding announced earlier this week.  

Spokesperson and volunteer Jo-anne Drewniak says the announcement came with a mix of emotions.   

Steinbach is the place to be this weekend, as many festivities are happening for the 55th Annual Pioneer Days Weekend. 

To kick off celebrations, the parade will be back on Steinbach’s Main St., on Friday, August 4. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for Southeast Helping Hands’ Tin for the Bin. 

We will give away candy and goodies with Wendy’s, so don’t miss our float! The parade kicks off at 10 AM. 

The first Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue of August kicked off Wednesday on the corner of Main and Lumber.  

Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue received this week’s raised funds. The grand total was $2,687.65. 

President Michelle Neufeld says the money raised will go towards operational costs, bills and food. She offers her gratitude for the community’s generosity. 

Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue’s (SAAR) mission is to find homes for abandoned and homeless animals. Since 2013, they have served communities across the southeast and ensured care for vulnerable animals.  

The provincial government announced funding for many projects across the southeast on Monday.  

The Grunthal Drop Zone, a centre offering programming for youth, received $372,500.  

Director Steve Elias is “pretty pumped” about the announcement. The funding will contribute towards their current project, where they are building a small gym and renovating their existing building. 

The cool breeze and sunshine paired perfectly with Sunday's La Broquerie Farmers Market.  

Community members from La Broquerie and the surrounding area picked up essentials and discovered unique items from the 18 local vendors offering their goods. 

From handmade signs and tote bags to Rwandan coffee and Saskatoon iced tea, there were many items available at the market. Local musicians also performed for those in attendance.

A weekend trip to the farmers market is never a bad idea, and this Sunday is the day to go. 

The La Broquerie Farmers Market is this Sunday, July 30, from 11 AM to 3 PM by the cow on Principale St. Market Coordinator Cheryl Beyak says there will be over 15 vendors on site with various fresh produce, local vendors selling their unique items and music to accompany the scene.
