Adult-themed text scam targets 306 area code

Adult-themed text scams have been infecting the province lately, including the Estevan area.

The trend of the text messages seems to be a feminine name followed by a link.

Greg Jacobs, external communications manager for SaskTel, said that while the scam might look different than most, it has the same end goal of acquiring personal or financial information. 

Saskatchewan wildlife benefits from community science project

Folks looking for something to do at home over the long weekend can join in on the global Great Backyard Bird Count from the comfort of their lawn chair.  

The 26th annual event runs from Friday through Monday, and all levels of birdwatchers are encouraged to take part. 

Sarah Bradley, the stewardship coordinator for the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), said the community science project helps collect vital information.  

Southwest ice crossing open for winter transportation

The Riverhurst ice crossing is open for the season earlier than usual thanks to extreme cold temperatures and a lack of snowfall.

A typical season for the road is from the beginning of February to the end of March, with this year's opening up last Wednesday.  

While the forecast is set to be in the positives this weekend, Director of Communcations for the Ministry of Highways, David Horth, said it won’t affect the crossing.  

Snowplow safety: Be patient, slow down, and keep distance

Even with some temperature rising, with snowfall, comes snowplows.

The Ministry of Highways is asking folks to be patient, slow down, and stay safe around those heavy machinery.

Saskatchewan snowplow Operator Mike Holowka, said that every day they're out on the roads they run into drivers that are in a rush, which is simultaneously scary and frustrating.

Saskatchewan scientist part of fusion energy breakthrough

A team of scientists working out of the Livermore National Laboratory in California have broken a scientific threshold in fusion energy. 

For the first time ever, fusion energy exceeded the amount of input energy.  

Shaunavon’s Dennis Whyte is the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Centre at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his team made major contributions to the breakthrough. 

No more waiting for winter weights

Winter weights season is finally here, after being postponed in the southwest due to above average temperatures.

Usually getting underway on November 16 each year, the provincial government has only officially given the green light for shippers to increase the weight of their loads on secondary highways starting today.

Emergency alert testing set for Saskatchewan

Folks in the area might hear a startling alarm sounding from their pockets on Wednesday afternoon.

Phones will be buzzing with emergency alerts around 1:55 p.m. as part of national testing by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

Tamie Vandeven, the program support director for the SPSA, said the bi-annual routine is to test the capability of their alerting system.

Influenza rate in children on the rise in Saskatchewan

Influenza cases have increased across the province, with youth under 19 years of age making up 61 per cent of influenza cases in the province, a rate that's continuing to increase.

As of November 10, about 15 per cent of the Saskatchewan population have received influenza vaccinations according to the Community Respiratory Illness Surveillance Program (CRISP).
