Police deal with harassment, impaired driver and donation bin theft

Estevan police responded to 50 calls for service over the weekend.

On Sept. 7, officers were called to a local restaurant after receiving several reports of a woman causing a disturbance and asking patrons to call police. She was warned about her behaviour and escorted out of the business.

Police also received a Reported Impaired Driver (RID) complaint involving a vehicle leaving a local liquor establishment. Due to a high volume of calls at the time, the vehicle was not located.

Tough start to the season for Estevan football teams

Estevan minor football teams were busy this past weekend, hitting the field for both road games and home matchups.

The ECS Elecs opened their season in Moose Jaw, facing a tough challenge against the Central Cyclones and falling 60–8.

Back home, Estevan hosted a Highway 39 doubleheader against Weyburn. The U12 Ravens dominated the Chargers, shutting them out 47–0, while the U14 Falcons blanked the Oilers 46–0.

Onslaught of sports betting ads make gambling seem enticing to youth, doctors say

Doctors are calling for restrictions on sports betting ads, saying they are setting youth up for a future of problem gambling.

An editorial published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday says the ads are everywhere during sports broadcasts and that the legalization of online gambling has made every smartphone a potential betting platform.

Editor Dr. Shannon Charlebois says even though betting sites say they're only for people 19 years of age and older, youth are being inundated with advertising that equates enjoying sports with betting.

Estevan police investigate robbery, indecent acts and multiple other incidents

Estevan police dealt with a variety of incidents over the September 4–6 period, including a robbery, mischief, and welfare checks.

On September 4, officers investigated the theft of fuel from a slip tank in the back of a vehicle. A statement was obtained and the matter remains under investigation. Police also received a report of criminal harassment; a statement was taken and the investigation continues.

Two arrested after Estevan police seize cash, cocaine and weapon

Two people are facing drug trafficking charges in Estevan after police executed a search warrant that turned up cash, cocaine and a prohibited weapon.

A 44-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were arrested on Sept. 4 following the investigation.

The man faces several charges, including trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, and resisting arrest.

Innovation in action: Southeast College takes research to the stage

Southeast College is preparing for a busy fall of research, collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Tanya Andrist, executive director of innovation and applied research, joined us in studio this week to highlight the college’s upcoming work.

She reflected on the recent graduation of students from Ocean Man First Nation.

“It was such a validation of that program. We were so proud of the students and also the partnership out at Ocean Man — it was a great day,” Andrist said.
