Milder, wetter winter ahead, predicts Old Farmer's Almanac
The Southern Prairies can expect a significant break from frigid temperatures this winter, according to the newly released 2026 Canadian edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac. The highly anticipated long-range forecast predicts a season that is warmer than normal with below-average snowfall.
"Winter is typically what everybody wants to know about," Carol Connare, editor-in-chief for the Almanac, said in an interview.
St. Giles Anglican Church hosts fall trade show
St. Giles Anglican Church welcomed the community for its annual fall trade show this week, offering visitors a chance to browse locally made items and enjoy a homemade soup and sandwich lunch.
Wendy Godfrey, the rector’s warden at St. Giles, said the event featured a variety of vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to delicious treats. “Some delicious things, some pretty things, all kinds of things,” she said. “And we also have a soup and sandwich lunch taking place with some really, really good soup this time. I’ve been able to smell it all morning.”
Hockey, political players react to death of Montreal Canadiens great Ken Dryden
Politicians and hockey stars are mourning the loss of hockey legend and former federal politician Ken Dryden, who passed away Friday at age 78 after a battle with cancer.
Dryden, 78, was a Hall of Fame goaltender who won six Stanley Cups backstopping the Montreal Canadiens as well as minding the cage during Canada's generation-defining victory at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
Air Canada flight attendants massively reject wage offer, union says
Air Canada flight attendants have massively rejected the employer's wage offer following a vote on a new contract that ended Saturday.
Flight attendants at Air Canada wrapped up voting at 3 p.m. ET on the tentative new contract, with 99.1 per cent voting down the airline's wage offer.
The airline says the wage portion will now be referred to mediation as previously agreed to by both sides.
United Way fundraiser kicks off telethon season at Orpheum Theatre

The Estevan 60 and Over Club continues to grow its activities and events, welcoming members and the wider community to join in.
Elaine Carriere, a director with the club, explained that an events committee was formed to keep things lively. “We try to have dances, we have cards, we have game night, crib tournaments, we have a whist tournament. So there are all kinds of activities that we’re trying to implement,” she said.

August brings dry and warm systems into the southeast
The final month of summer wrapped up for the southeast, and Environment and Climate Change Canada took a look at some of the figures they'd been following over the weeks.
Meteorologist Crawford Luke details the rainfall that the area received over the last month.
"For the month of August, we had 37.8 millimeters at our station there. That compares to the long-term normal of 47.4. So it's a little bit on the drier side, but it's definitely kind of fairly close to normal, I would say. Nothing really too notable, I guess."

A key member of the Montreal Canadiens' 1970s dynasty, Dryden's career in the spotlight was only just getting started when he retired from the game — and while at the top of his own game — in his early 30s.
