Elecs look to finish strong as McLeod series concludes

The 88th McLeod Series wraps up tonight in Estevan, with the Elecs looking to build on their first-game performance.

In the opening leg, the ECS senior boys rallied from a slow start but came up short in an 80-75 loss. The Elecs’ senior girls, meanwhile, controlled their game from start to finish, earning a 72-44 victory.

Building on that experience, the boys’ team has focused on improving its defense ahead of the rematch.

Province lays out new measures working against fentanyl and methamphetamine in Saskatchewan

The province of Saskatchewan is introducing a number of new measures to target fentanyl and methamphetamine production, transportation, trafficking, and street use.

Some of the province's goals with the measures includes removing fentanyl and methamphetamine from communities, significantly deterring anyone from trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine, and preventing street-level use to protect health and safety and preventing the medical system from being undermined.

Once banned, now in demand: Freedom to Read Week brings challenged books to light

A collection of once-banned books is on display at the Estevan Public Library this week, inviting readers to explore titles that have faced censorship over the years. The display is part of Freedom to Read Week, which runs from February 23 to March 1, 2025, an annual event that highlights the importance of intellectual freedom in communities across Canada and beyond.

Jason Redshaw, head librarian at the Estevan Public Library, said the week is about the right to access books and information without restriction.

Estevan Police reports latest statistics from final quarterly report of 2024

The Estevan Police Service posted its most recent quarterly report, covering October to December, earlier this month and showed it off during Monday night's council meeting.

The first section of their report focused on traffic statistics, beginning with Targeted Traffic Enforcement Operations. Those saw a decrease in charges to 444, down from 604 in the third quarter and 501 in the second.

Bears bounce back and battle on, set for three games in three days

The U18 AAA Estevan Great North Bears had an up-and-down weekend at Affinity Place, delivering a dominant 9-2 win over the Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors on Saturday before falling 7-1 in Sunday’s rematch.

Saturday’s game started with a goal from Cameron Allard, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead after the first period. The second period remained scoreless before the Bears erupted for eight goals in the third. Jase McNichol, Will Nicholson, DJ Brass (2), Boston Schmidt, Roan Burgess, and Cooper Flath (2) all found the back of the net to seal the win.

Estevan accepts tender for new pool coming to Hillside Park

The Estevan City Council is moving ahead on a tender which they've accepted for Hillside Park's pool.

The project will be composed of the design, supply and construction of a community swimming pool at Hillside Park.

The city had a choice between Paradise Pools, which offered a price of $504,148.91, and Western Recreation, which sent an estimated cost of $568,000.

Additional events required before construction include a preconstruction meeting and an official public announcement of the project.

ECS cheer squad celebrated and council meeting following big victory

A local cheer team was recognized at last night's city council meeting following their win on a very big stage.

The ECS cheer team competed in the Best of the West competition earlier this month and won first place in their division.

Coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme, who guides the team along with McKenna Van De Woestyne, talked at the meeting saying the team did very well, especially for their composition.

Photo speed enforcement implemented to deter speeding, reduce collision fatalities

Motorists driving through high-speed areas or construction or school zones may notice signs indicating photo speed enforcement (PSE). SGI has an implemented PSE network across the province designed to reduce speeding and speed-related vehicle accidents.  

The program uses a dual radar system to identify and track a vehicle to calculate its speed. If the vehicle meets the criteria for a speeding violation, a photo is taken including time, date, and speed.
