McGillivray in the Morning Moments

Last week we had a chance to spend some time in bear country. I'm not sure if there is anything more enjoyable than watching bear cubs play and scrap from the safety of your vehicle. Mom is never too far away, and even if she looks like she isn't paying attention, she is.

We couldn't get through the trip without finding a moose as well. That just makes sense for The Moose Whisperer.

Darryl Gervais, late of Estevan, SK passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Estevan, SK at the age of 72 years, with his wife and daughter Wanita by his side.
The Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of God with Pastor John Mohan presiding. The family invites everyone to the luncheon in the Church of God social hall following the service. The interment will take place at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens.

Golden Garbage Can competition begins today with judges visiting Estevan and Weyburn

Today, the Golden Garbage Can competition is looking to see whether Estevan or Weyburn is the cleanest city in the southeast.

With the last competition over a decade ago, both cities have made efforts to make sure their jurisdictions are as clean as possible.

The competition begins with judges going through Estevan from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with subsequent judging in Weyburn set for 1 to 2:30 p.m. The final crowning of the Golden Garbage Can winner will be at the Weyburn City Hall, tentatively set for 3:30 p.m.

Unemployment down in southeast Saskatchewan, again

The latest job numbers from Statistics Canada were released Friday morning, and southeast Saskatchewan again saw a drop in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate for the Regina-Moose Mountain Economic Region, which includes Estevan, was 4.8 per cent in May, down from 5.1 per cent in April. This was the third consecutive month the unemployment rate declined in the region.  

FCAA gives out tips on dealing with unlicensed door-to-door salespeople

With some unlicensed individuals acting as door-to-door salespeople in North Battlefords recently, the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) is posting some tips for people to be aware of with door-to-door salespeople.

As a rule, the FCAA cautions the public to never engage with a direct seller unless you have verified their licence, and not to purchase any goods or services from unlicensed sellers.

Anyone who opens their door for a salesperson should follow some of the following tips from the FCAA:

The lack of moisture is becoming more of a concern in Alberta

Plant 2025 is virtually complete in Alberta, other than a few acres in the Peace region.

Canada has unveiled its priorities for the G7 leaders' summit just one week before it gets underway in Alberta as the government defends its decision to invite India to the summit.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office says Ottawa's top priority for the summit will be strengthening global peace and security, which includes countering foreign interference and transnational crime, as well as improving responses to wildfires.

Saskatchewan expands measles vaccine access for high-risk infants

Saskatchewan health officials are adjusting immunization guidelines to allow earlier measles vaccinations for infants at higher risk of exposure.

The province announced Tuesday that babies aged six to 11 months may now receive an early dose of the measles vaccine if they live in, are travelling to, or have close contact with individuals in areas reporting active measles cases.

FCAA asks consumers to be aware of scams using new Prime Minister's identitiy

Scammers using Prime Minister Mark Carney's appearance to promote fake stories centred around a securities company are in the spotlight for the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan. FCAA reports that Canfirst, a company claiming to present trading opportunities, such as stocks and cryptocurrency. Canfirst is not registered in Saskatchewan to sell securities or derivatives.

FCAA Securities Division Executive Director Dean Murrison reminds people not to fall for stories that purport to be from notable media figures.
