Autumn migration brings in a new batch of birds
With the fall season, Saskatchewan sees numerous bird species passing through on their migration, others leaving for more southern locations, and some coming to stay for the winter.
A few of the province's winged winter residents include Canada geese, snow geese, sandhill cranes, juncos, a plethora of ducks, and even a handful of whooping cranes.
Jordan Rustad, conservation coordinator with Nature Saskatchewan, noted most of the province's at-risk species, such as the burrowing owl, have already moved farther south.
AFN vote on $47.8B child welfare reform deal doesn't pass after lengthy debate
First Nations chiefs have voted to reject a landmark $47.8-billion child welfare reform deal, reached in July with the Canadian government.
At a special chiefs assembly in Calgary hosted by the Assembly of First Nations, 267 out of 414 chiefs voted against a resolution in support of the deal after a lengthy debate that at points was emotionally charged as they argued either for or against it.
UPDATE: Subject of Amber Alert located, suspect arrested
An Amber Alert that had been issued early this evening by Waskesiu RCMP has been cancelled.
The Waskesiu/Montreal Lake RCMP received a report at around 2 p.m. that a five-day-old baby had been taken from a residence on Montreal Cree Nation. RCMP officers responded and the investigation determined that the baby had been taken by the father.
A subsequent investigation led to an Amber Alert being issued at 5:08 p.m. The RCMP noted that the alert stated the baby was taken from the health clinic. The information was gathered during the initial response and was incorrect.
Rhyan Hagel looking to build trust with community if elected to city council
With a final list of nominees on the ballot for the Estevan city council election coming up this November, one candidate is hoping to get onto the council for the first time.
Rhyan Hagel is running for a position on the council, leveraging his experience in post-secondary political settings to drive him forward.

Estevan Bears look to bounce back in Prince Albert showdown
The U18AAA Estevan Bears are heading to Prince Albert this weekend for a rematch after dropping two games last weekend.
Jason Johnstone, assistant coach for the Bears said the team will be focused on consistency heading into the next game.
“We had spurts of playing well, running our systems like we were supposed to, and then we kind of backed off and gave them opportunities,” he said. “When we play a full, consistent 60-minute hockey game, we’ll like the results a lot better.”
Between games, the Bears have been working on power plays and defensive zone structure.
Canadian Grain Commission dipping into surplus to keep fees steady

That comes as grain volumes are falling for Canada, and the commission needs more funds to keep up with their costs.

Estevan’s free landfill weekend starts tomorrow
Estevan's Free Landfill Weekend starts tomorrow, allowing residents to dispose of certain household items at no cost.
Running from Friday to Sunday, the event is open only to Estevan residents, with proof of residency required. Commercial properties and rural customers are not eligible.
Accepted items include furniture, grass clippings, tree branches, and regular household garbage. Some appliances will be accepted, excluding refrigerators and air conditioners. Mattresses, box springs, and hazardous waste are not allowed.
Estevan Oilers look to extend historic run in playoff showdown
The league-leading U14 Estevan Oilers are heading into playoff action this weekend, where they will face the fifth-ranked Weyburn Falcons, with the winner advancing to the league final.
The Oilers finished the regular season with a 5-1 record. “This is the first time that this age group has ever experienced this kind of success, so it feels really good, and I can’t imagine how happy the players are about it,” said head coach Christian Pfiefer.
