Estevan police respond to hit-and-run, fraud and theft arrests
Estevan Police Service dealt with a range of incidents on May 28, including a hit-and-run collision, credit card fraud, and a theft arrest.
Police received a report of a vehicle window broken overnight. Nothing was taken from the vehicle, and the matter remains under investigation.
Members attended a report of a domestic disturbance occurring in the street. Both parties were spoken to and warned about their actions.
Inactive wells in Saskatchewan dropping in number with provincial program
A program set up in 2023 is seeing some decent results from the province as they're looking to clean up old oil wells.
The Inactive Liability Reduction Program, administered through the Ministry of Energy, has seen inactive wells in Saskatchewan drop by 1,083.

Province declares wildfire state of emergency due to northern fires
As wildfires rage across Saskatchewan's north, the provincial government has declared a provincial State of Emergency.
Premier Scott Moe made that declaration earlier this afternoon, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).
In the release, the SPSA states that there are 17 active wildfires in Saskatchewan with 15 communities having been evacuated. This year-to-date, there have been 206 wildfires, well above the five-year average of 125.
Nearly 3,000 wildlife collisions recorded in Saskatchewan this spring
Spring is when Saskatchewan’s wildlife is most active near our province’s roadways, and while we are on the tail end of the busy season, we’re not out of the woods yet.
The province has seen just shy of 3,000 incidents involving vehicles and wildlife—2,930 to be exact—in the past three months and each year, SGI reports that there are an average of 400 injuries and at least one fatality in the province due to wildlife collisions.
ECS students recognized for academic and extracurricular achievements at award night
Last night, the Estevan Comprehensive School was host to their awards night, celebrating the academic and community achievements of a number of students. The awards ranged from scholarships from companies that hoped to see students join their industries, scholarships in memory of community members, and scholarships for academic achievement over the year.
ECS Principal James Jones says he's happy to award the students who help to make the ECS and Estevan as a whole a better place.

Yeti takes the title as May’s Perfect Pet!
After a rainy month full of muddy paws and cozy cuddles, one pup stood out—and it’s Yeti, a Jack Russell mix with a big heart and a serious love for walks and naps.
Yeti was adopted from the Estevan Humane Society, and according to his owner Dallas, he’s a total mama’s boy who’s happiest when he’s curled up for a nap or out on a stroll. He’s also got a housemate—Arnie—who’s no stranger to the Perfect Pet Contest either. When asked if Arnie might be jealous of Yeti’s win, Dallas was quick to say they’ll share the spotlight.
Council discusses tax changes with bylaws amended during discussion
The most recent meeting of the city council held a discussion about tax bylaws, and from that, some changes from the original plan were made during the meeting. Among the tax changes were the minimum and base tax amounts, which were changed to $1,200 and $1,000, respectively.
Seeing as they were previously $750, Councillor Kirsten Walliser suggested an approach that'd let people ease into the new cost.
CBSA says 67 per cent of drugs seized in month-long operation were coming into Canada
More than 67 per cent of the drugs seized during a month-long cross-country Canada Border Services Agency operation were coming into Canada from the United States, the agency says.
Operation Blizzard took place from Feb. 12 to March 13 and targeted illegal drugs and precursor chemicals transported by mail, air cargo or marine container, the CBSA said in a news release Wednesday. The agency said it focused on shipments going to the United States.
