Alton's family is devastated to announce his passing at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, Sask. on October 5, 2024 at the age of 39. The Wake will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. at the White Bear First Nations Community Hall. The traditional feast will commence at 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the same location, followed by the Funeral Service and giveaway. Interment will take place in the Bigstone Cemetery, White Bear First Nations.

Police remind drivers to be careful following collision with child on bicycle

The Estevan Police Service is reminding drivers to be careful when it comes to bicyclists in the city following a collision with a minor earlier this week.

In a release dated October 8, EPS members say they responded to a vehicle-on-bicycle collision at the intersection of 4th Street and 14th Avenue shortly after 8 a.m.  EMS assessed the 8-year-old who was riding the bicycle and found only minor injuries to the child.

The vehicle's driver ended up charged under the Traffic Safety Act.

At his request, there will be no public service, but a small family gathering will be held at a later date. At that time there will also be a celebration of life afterward for extended family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pamela Berthelette age 69 years, on Friday, October 4, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Estevan, SK with family by her side.

The private family service will be held at a later date.

The Highway 39 Rivalry between Estevan and Weyburn was alive and well last night, as the ECS Elecs and the WCS Eagles fought hard in the first round of the Co-Op Challenge Series. Estevan's senior boys and girls volleyball teams dominated their Weyburn opponents and swept each of their best-of-five sets. 

"I thought we played very, very well," said Hunter Perkins, the Elecs head coach for the girls team. "Our players showed up. It's a big crowd and they were a little nervous to start with, but we settled in and we did very well."

'It's all going to be gone': Florida-based Canadian artist braces for Milton damage

A Toronto artist based in Florida says he's anxiously waiting to ensure the safety of his friends in the state and assess the potentially catastrophic damage to his property as Hurricane Milton barrels towards his community just outside Sarasota.

He's just one of many Canadians who own homes in the state. Like him, many have fled because of this hurricane or its predecessor Helene, which unleashed devastation across several southern states just a few weeks ago. 

Access Communications purchases naming rights for Estevan indoor pool

Access Communications has announced it is sponsoring the Estevan Leisure Centre by purchasing naming rights, with the indoor pool now renamed to the Access Communications Aquatic Centre (ACAC).

"Our sponsorship reflects our ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of those in the communities we serve. Nominations close for Estevan municipal elections with over a dozen names hitting the ballots

The nominations to run for municipal positions have closed, including the city council and the mayor's office.

Additionally seats for the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division's board and the South East Cornerstone Public School Division's board.

CFIA releases "What we heard report" on seed regulatory modernization

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has released a report on the latest recommendations and feedback relating to modernizing the seed regulations in Canada.

The process began in 2021 and covers several areas from import to export, seed conditioning, storage, testing and labeling to seed sales.

The National Manager for the Seed Section of the CFIA, Wendy Jahn says a number of the regulations, policies and programs interact with each other and rather than making changes one at a time it makes more sense to take a holistic approach to modernizing the system.

Fire Prevention Week has southeast departments spreading best practices for residents

Fire departments around the southeast are letting residents know how to keep a fire from causing damage during Fire Prevention Week. That includes watching for the signs of a fire and making sure equipment such as smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are in the right spot.
