Police tactical team sharpens skills during two days of exercise in the southeast

Estevan Police Service and Weyburn Police Service members met up last week in order to practice as part of the Joint Tactical Support Team, (JTST) which responds to a number of situations in both communities.

The JTST blocked off an area in Estevan on Thursday, before also practicing in Weyburn on Friday.

AGI launches Conveyor for a Cause campaign

Ag Growth International has teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) to raise funds for a cure for breast cancer.

Since its peak in 1986, the breast cancer death rate has been nearly cut in half. Today, the 5-year survival rate continues to improve. But there is still work to do! 

Ag Growth International’s (AGI) Canadian farm team has released a pink limited-edition UCX³ U-trough belt conveyor to raise funds to support breast cancer awareness.

Southeast harvest at 98 per cent completed following warm fall season

Harvest is close to wrapped up for the southeast according to the latest crop report released by the provincial government.

In the entirety of the southeast region, harvest is 98 per cent completed. Broken down by region, census area 2 - which includes Avonlea, Fillmore, Minton, Radville and Weyburn - has reached 100 per cent, with all other southeast areas within 95 per cent complete.

SARM says provincial parties should keep an eye on rural crime as an important campaign piece

Rural crime is one topic that the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities is hoping the provincial parties have in mind as the election continues.

Both the Saskatchewan Party and the Saskatchewan NDP have announced measures to expand police capabilities, through the Saskatchewan Marshals Program and hiring more RCMP officers, respectively.

The Wardens to kick off Estevan Arts Council’s 2024/2025 Concert Series

The Estevan Arts Council is set to launch its 2024/2025 Concert Series with a performance by The Wardens on October 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Wardens, a Rocky Mountain-based trio, blend folk, roots, and western music with stories from their years as national park wardens in Alberta and British Columbia.

Over the last few years, a real emphasis has been put on the importance of making your mental health a priority and removing the stigma around reaching out for help.

Farming is known to be one of the most dangerous occupations, it involves a lot of stress and factors unique to agriculture like the weather and markets both of which can have a major impact and are totally out of farmers' control.

Learning ways to recognize and release stress is key especially when trying to stay focused when working with large farm equipment or unpredictable livestock.

Oxbow Farmers Market to host 4th Annual Fall Festival

The Oxbow Farmers Market’s 4th Annual Fall Festival is set for October 19 at the Oxbow Community Hall, featuring a day filled with local vendors, family activities, and a special fundraising initiative. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s festival aims to raise funds for a new gazebo at the market's summer location, a project embraced by the community. "We are super excited to continue doing this, and our community has responded so well year after year," said Marilyn Simons.

Saskatchewan will need 15,000 workers in the mining industry in the next decade

Due to growth in the sector and an aging workforce, 15 thousand workers will need to be hired by 2034 to fill the vacancies in Saskatchewan’s mining industry.

That’s from Pam Schwann, President of the Saskatchewan Mining Association. She says according to the latest Mining Labour Market Report, the number one priority is for more people to get involved in the trades.

She says right now, 15 per cent of Saskatchewan’s work force resides out of province and comes into Saskatchewan to work.
