CSIS says a former parliamentarian may have worked on behalf of a foreign government

A former parliamentarian is suspected of "having worked to influence parliamentary business" on behalf of an unnamed foreign government, Canada's spy service told a federal inquiry Friday.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service also cited indications that an unspecified foreign government engaged in meddling to reduce the likelihood of a specific Liberal candidate of being elected federally.

Estevan Fire Rescue runs through busy week's calls with grass fire, false alarms

Estevan Fire Rescue (EFR) has had a busy couple of weeks, with plenty of dispatches going out for alarms in the area.

Fire Chief Rick Davies talks about the calls over the past couple of weeks.

Two weeks ago on September 16, EFR was dispatched to a residential alarm around 6:30 a.m. in the Northeast area of the city. Crews responded to investigate a possible carbon monoxide alarm. The crew found no cause for the possible smoke alarm and found no CO readings for a possible carbon monoxide alarm. The residence was then cleared with a possible alarm issue being blamed.

Prayers will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Services in Estevan, Sask. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 30, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Catholic Church in Lampman, Sask. with Rev. Thuy Nguyen the Celebrant. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, after which all are invited to join in a time of lunch and fellowship in the parish hall.

Town of Carlyle commits $2.5 million towards new combined school for Pre-K to Grade 12

The Town of Carlyle has announced they're committing $2.5 million towards a new school in their community. The project is in collaboration with Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division after the town was chosen for a new school by the provincial government last year. 

Harvest progresses in the southeast despite recent rain delays

Harvest is nearly complete in the region, with 83 per cent finished, despite delays caused by precipitation over the past week. This is an increase from 77 per cent reported the previous week and is ahead of the five-year average of 77 per cent and the 10-year average of 76 per cent.

As producers work to finish harvest, they are also busy with fall weed control spraying, harrowing, baling, hauling bales, cleaning corrals, and fencing. Some producers have begun their winter cereal seeding operations.

Disability rights groups launch Charter challenge against MAID law

A coalition of disability rights organizations has launched a Charter challenge against a part of Canada's law on medical assistance in dying, calling it an "abandonment” of people with disabilities. 

The group announced Thursday that it had filed a notice of application to challenge what's known as track two of the MAID law, which it argues has resulted in premature deaths.  

Kitchen raises concerns about impartiality in House

Earlier this week, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Greg Fergus, admonished Members of Parliament in general, and gave them a warning about their behaviour after a heated exchange in the House of Commons some thought could turn to blows.  

The Conservatives stated the NDP leader Jagmeet Singh challenged Conservative leader Piere Poilievre to a fight during the exchange, while the NDP stated Singh was standing up to bullying from Poilievre.  

Chilling drop in temperatures could bring first frost of the season

The current weather feels a lot like summer, but soon the southeast will be brought back to fall as next week sees a sharp drop in temperatures.

That comes as the month changes to October and even more leaves change colour.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang says that with the jet stream shifting we'll see temperatures closer to the usual cool weather of fall.

Pilon confident in Bears’ momentum heading into season start

As the U18 AAA Estevan Bears prepare for their season opener against the Tisdale Trojans, head coach Ryan Pilon is eager to see his team hit the ice. Following a successful weekend of exhibition games, the Bears are looking to build momentum with a roster that blends experienced veterans and promising new talent.

Reflecting on the weekend’s games, Pilon noted the Bears used the opportunity to rest some of their veteran players and give affiliate players (APs) a chance to compete.
