This month’s contest brought in a fantastic mix of furry (and not-so-furry) friends. We had playful pups, cool cats, a hamster named Tony, and even a goat named Winnie—all showing off their charm for a shot at the title of July’s Perfect Pet.

Raymond Heidinger passed away on Friday, July 22, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Long Term Care, Estevan, SK at the age of 88 years old. Raymond was born on November 2, 1936 in Lampman, Saskatchewan, the 5th child to John and Katherine Heidinger.

The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed a request to hear an appeal from Achter Land and Cattle regarding an earlier court decision that found a thumbs-up emoji served as an agreement to a grain contract. South West Terminal launched a claim for damages after Achter Land and Cattle failed to deliver on the contract.
Canada Cup highlighted by strong showing from Estevan volleyball crew
Estevan was well represented at the 2025 Canada Cup in Thorold, Ont., over the weekend, with three athletes and a coach playing key roles on Team Saskatchewan’s U17 and under-16 U16 Selects squads.
The U17 Green Selects, featuring Estevan players Keith Daae and Aidan Turner and coached by Bryton Such, captured the bronze medal. The team posted a 4–2 overall record, finishing second in their pool with wins over the Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games team (NL CG) and the Manitoba Canada Summer Games team (Manitoba CSG), along with a narrow loss to Alberta U17.
Manitoba man faces child pornography charges in Estevan
A 20-year-old man from Brandon, Manitoba is facing multiple charges following an investigation by the Estevan Police Service.
He has been charged with creating child pornography, possession of child pornography, extortion and uttering threats.
Police say they received a complaint earlier this year. With the assistance of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) units, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Brandon, leading to the man's arrest and the seizure of several items.
Big Backyard BioBlitz is back to track local species
An annual initiative to help gather vital data by snapping photos of any insects, wildlife, or plant species begins this week.
Nature lovers and families can take part in the Nature Conservancy of Canada's fifth Big Backyard BioBlitz, which kicks off today and runs until August 4.
Kayla Burak, engagement manager with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, shared that the BioBlitz usually takes place over the August long weekend, but has been extended this year to allow for even more submissions.
U.S. politics threaten to complicate Canada’s co-hosting of 2026 World Cup
With less than a year to go until the 2026 World Cup, political tensions and U.S. policy threaten to pose problems as Canada, the United States and Mexico prepare to co-host the tournament.
Next year’s FIFA World Cup will be the biggest ever, with the three countries hosting a record 48 teams. Between June 11 and July 19, they will play 104 matches, most of them in the U.S.
Bank of Canada expected to hold key rate again
Avery Shenfeld doesn't think the Bank of Canada will cut its benchmark interest rate at its decision on Wednesday, but if it does, he said it will be a "pleasant surprise."
"There's always a chance that they'll surprise with the rate cut," the chief economist of CIBC said.
Most economists are also expecting the Bank of Canada will hold its policy rate steady at 2.75 per cent for a third consecutive decision later this week.
