Sports Update - Friday, November 15th

The Virden Oil Kings scored eight third period goals en route to a 13-1 victory over the Souris Elks at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Bradley Bowles, Devon LeBlanc and Jackson Orr had two goals each for the Oil Kings while singles went to Jason Bowles, Jeremy Johnson, Joel Cosens, Tanner Koroscil, Nolan Wallace, James Sytnyk and Tanner Lewis. Callum Fortin had the lone goal for the Elks. Virden leads the Tiger Hills Hockey League's West Division with a 4-0 record. Souris is winless in three games this season. 

Lightning strike down Jets’ unbeaten road run

The Winnipeg Jets suffered their first road loss of the season last night, falling 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

The loss snapped a franchise-record seven-game road winning streak to start the season.

Winnipeg’s power play, which had been red-hot at a league-leading 42.2 per cent, faltered in Tampa, going 0-for-5.

Captain Adam Lowry scored the lone goal for the Jets, his third of the season, while goaltender Eric Comrie made 32 saves in his first loss after a five-game winning streak.

Brady Oliveira sweeps CFL’s top honours, makes Blue Bombers history

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira etched his name in the history books on Thursday night.

The 27-year-old Winnipeg native took home the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player for the first time and Most Outstanding Canadian award for the second time in his career.

Oliveira’s dominance on the field this season was undeniable, leading the league with 1,353 rushing yards.

Boissevain-Morton Foundation hands out more than $94,000 in grants

The Boissevain and Morton Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2024 grants, with more than $94,000 handed out to 19 organizations and groups.

The Turtle Mountain School Division Parent Advisory Council received $25,000 for playground equipment, while the Boissevain Golf Club received just over $19,000 for a commercial zero turn lawnmower.

Other notable grants inlclude $8,000 to the Southwest Seniors Housing Corp for a chair lift, and $5,300 to Boissevain Food Pantry to purchase groceries for clients.

Premier comments on Manitoba Wildlife Federation town halls

Manitoba's Premier is aware and understands there are concerns from the province's hunting community right now. Wab Kinew made the comment in light of the recent series of Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) town hall meetings focused on ensuring fair and sustainable access to wildlife resources. 

The meetings came on the heels of the province's decision earlier this year to reduce the number of moose draw licenses by 75% in four of Manitoba's game hunting areas, something the MWF felt was done without the full engagement of licensed hunters.

Canada Post workers go on strike Friday morning, disrupting deliveries

Canada Post workers are on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with their employer.

Canadian Union of Postal Workers says approximately 55,000 workers are striking, claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued a 72-hour strike notice earlier in the week, saying it's been asking for fair wages, safer working conditions and other improvements over nearly a year of bargaining.

RCMP rolls out body-worn cameras for officers nationally

The RCMP is rolling out body-worn cameras for officers, deploying more than 10,000 cameras across the country in the next 12 to 18 months.

Officers will be expected to turn on their cameras when they answer calls or interact with the public. They will wear the cameras on their chests and they will flash red lights to indicate they are recording.

"The muscle memory that we're training officers to build in is essentially seatbelt off, camera on," said Taunya Goguen, the RCMP’s corporate management officer, at a press briefing Thursday. 

Protein Industries Canada partnering for improvement of plant-based cheese

Earlier this year, Protein Industries Canada announced a project and partnership with agriculture companies to help improve plant-based products including cheese. Partnering with Daiya Foods, Ingredion, Ingredion Plant Based Specialties (IPBPS) and Lovingly Made Flour Mills; the goal is to use Canadian grown crops such as peas and faba beans to help improve the taste, texture, and overall quality of plant-based cheese.

Katharina Tina Toews nee Dueck, 100, of Altona formerly of New Hope, passed away Wednesday, November 13th at Eastview Place. She is survived by 1 daughter, 1 son, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Ben H. Toews. 
Private interment will be held at Altona Cemetery at a later date.
