A voice for the ages, as 99-year-old helps Torquay celebrate 100
At 99 years old, Kathryn Groshong returned to Torquay to sing once again, taking part in the community’s centennial celebration.
“It was wonderful to come back to Torquay,” she said. “We retired to Weyburn and I’m still there. But when we were at Torquay, our whole family was involved in the music. We were singing in the choir and taking part in musicals. Torquay just seemed to have so much talent.”
Groshong was recognized alongside other seniors aged 90 and up during the weekend’s formal program. Each was presented with a long-stemmed rose.
Drake Milligan rocks the grandstand at Frontier Days
Frontier Days received some help wrapping up with a star-studded performance Saturday night.
Texas-born Drake Milligan took to the grandstand to kick off the Western Canadian leg of his self-titled tour, Drake Milligan in Concert, in front of ecstatic Swift Current fans.
Hafford, Saskatchewan’s The Brothers G performed the opening set, before making way for the headliner, Milligan, who was thrilled to return to the province.

Kindersley Composite School's Law 30 class recently toured the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert, gaining a unique perspective on the workings inside the federal prison system. The visit, which lasted about three hours, was part of a class project designed to help students better understand the role and day-to-day operations of correctional facilities.
Eliana Helgason, one of the students on the tour, said the experience challenged some of her previous assumptions about prison life. “I think, in the end, it made me rethink a career choice of mine,” she said.

Watermain repair closes 9th Street NW
A watermain repair has prompted a temporary closure of 9th Street NW between Lorne Avenue and Fisher Avenue in Portage la Prairie.
The City is notifying residents that the closure and disruption to water services are effective immediately on Monday, June 30.
Officials say they intend to restore water services and reopen the road by the end of the day once repairs are complete.
Residents affected by the closure may experience water disruptions during the repair work.

Bridge jumping into water continues despite warnings — Airdrie to fine youth and parents
Bridge jumping into water has continued in Airdrie despite posted warning signs, prompting the City to warn that it will begin issuing fines, with penalties extending to parents or guardians of youth offenders.
The enforcement follows a Streets Bylaw amendment passed on June 17. The City said fines are effective immediately.
"...The amendment addresses the dangerous activity of bridge jumping, which has raised serious concerns in areas including Bayside, Midtown and the Canals," the city stated in a news release.
