Baseball meets books: Gulls host story time at local library

The Sylvan Lake Gulls return for story time at local library.

The Sylvan Lake Gulls are ready to tell a few stories and hit a home run for literacy.

The team returns for another year of Gulls Story Time at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library on Thursday, July 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The event features baseball-themed story readings, a Q&A with players and coaches, photo opportunities, and a visit from Sully the Gully.

68 wildfires remain active according to SPSA

As of 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has reported 68 active wildfires across the province. The agency’s latest update categorizes seven fires as contained, 15 as not contained, 30 as undergoing assessment, and 16 as involving protection of critical values such as communities, infrastructure, or resources. 

Watch for delays on Highway 12 between Lacombe and Bentley

Starting today, Wednesday, July 9, traffic may be delayed on Highway 12 between Lacombe and Bentley.

Crews will be working on pothole repairs in both directions. Speed will be reduced to 50 km/h with one lane of alternate traffic. 

Watch for flag persons and be prepared to stop.

Work is expected to run daily from 7 am to 4:30 on until July 18th.

As the summer heat intensifies across the region, pet owners are being reminded to take extra care to protect their animals from heat-related illnesses.

High temperatures can become dangerous for pets, especially dogs and cats left outdoors for extended periods.

Animals can overheat faster than humans, and factors like age, breed, and health conditions can increase their risk. 

Police investigating after three people hospitalized in Stampede Midway assault

Police are investigating a serious assault that left three people hospitalized after an incident on the Calgary Stampede Midway late Tuesday night.

Officers were called to reports of an assault near the Euroslide at about 11:05 p.m. on July 8, where they found a man in medical distress.

He was transported to hospital in life-threatening but stable condition, Calgary police said in a Wednesday morning release.

Alberta government offering its own museum freebies as part of Canada Strong pass

Alberta's government is jumping on board a federal initiative aimed at saving Canadians a buck if they stay close to home this summer.

The province says it's offering its own free and discounted admissions as part of the Canada Strong Pass program, introduced by the federal government last month.

First promised as a way to promote Canadian tourism in response to the U.S. tariff war, the federal pass includes free access to national parks and historic sites, along with free rail tickets and museum admission for those under 18.

Resurfacing to impact 12th Avenue West traffic in Kindersley

Drivers in Kindersley can expect temporary lane closures and minor delays as road work gets underway on 12th Avenue West.

The project, part of ongoing road improvements in the area, will be completed in two phases.

In the first phase, a milling crew will remove asphalt around the concrete curbs. Later, an asphalt paving crew will return to resurface the roadway.

The town is asking motorists to use caution, follow posted signage, and plan for slight delays during both phases of construction. An exact start date was not provided, but work is expected to begin soon.

Applications open for Weyburn Salvation Army's Back to School program

Time might be flying for the kids this summer while they are having fun, but it is also flying for parents who may already be seeing the need for help with school supplies.

While the Weyburn Salvation Army is serving lunch to school children each weekday throughout summer from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at their Fourth Street location, they are already working on helping out with the next school year.

Community Ministries Worker Nicole Strickland said the application deadline for their Back to School program is July 30th. 

Larry Preddy retires following 40 years of work at Hender's Drugs

Estevan is seeing a local pharmacist who co-owned a local institution retire now that summer's rolled around. Larry Preddy, the co-owner of Hender's Drugs since January 1985, retired on June 30, celebrating over 40 years in the position.

Preddy says that it's been quite the ride, with plenty of experience in Estevan.

Saskatchewan housing organizations take a look at latest reports and how they portray the housing market

A new report from the Saskatchewan Realtors Association took a look at some of the latest statistics coming out of the housing market, seeing some tightening conditions in multiple areas.

For Regina, 402 sales were reported in June, up over six percent year-over-year and nearly 17 percent above the 10-year average.
