Alberta government to fund one year of increased costs for rural RCMP

The Alberta RCMP are going to be receiving more funding from the provincial government.

For one year, that is.

The province is on the hook for providing policing services to municipal districts, counties, and urban municipalities with a population lower than 5,000 people.

In 2019, the Alberta Government announced they were increasing funding for RCMP services due to an increase in rural crime at the time.

That funding helped to create hundreds of additional positions in the RCMP around the province.

Candidate Conversations: John Corrigan

John Corrigan is one of four candidates seeking re-election for Weyburn City Council in this year's municipal election.

In a discussion with Discover Weyburn earlier this week he outlined his plan to hit ground running with the experience he’s garnered in his first term.

“Over the last four years, I've served on a number of committees, and now I feel like, if I'm re-elected, I can get into that working mode right from day one.”

His plan for the first 100 days after the election involves sharing what he’s learned with any new councilors.

Morden Police issue fresh fraud warning as scams continue to roll in

Another case of fraud has Morden Police Service once again emphasizing caution to online shoppers.

Late last month, someone purchased an item on VarageSale and sent an e-transfer to the seller, but when they went to alleged seller's home to pick it up, the person living there said they had the wrong address.

The buyer tried to contact the seller, but the account had already been deleted from the app.

Police stress, to never send an e-transfer until you have the item you're buying in your hand and can confirm the seller is legitimate

WPS called to de-escalate situation at medical facility

On Tuesday of last week, the Weyburn Police Service received a call from a medical facility seeking assistance with an unruly patient. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says their presence was enough to ease the situation.

“Sometimes it's just that police presence can calm things down. You don't want it to escalate. They're not, the general public or workers. it's a tough situation when someone's in the facility and they're really acting violent or in a threatening manner, but they are where they need to be to get the help that they need. It's a tough balance.”
