Holy Trinity speaks on Artificial Intelligence procedure

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) becoming more commonly used in daily life and academia, Holy Trinity Catholic School Division (HTCSD) has created an Administrative Procedure to address its use for students and staff. 

“With all new technology, I think it’s important for school divisions to pay attention to it, to make sure that it’s used properly,” said Ward Streuby, director of education with HTCSD. 

JPCH Radiothon enters its second day

It’s the second day of the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon, raising money for cardiac and respiratory care at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) in Saskatoon, our province’s state-of-the-art centre for medical care for children to 17-year-olds. 

The first Radiothon was held 22 years ago, and over $16.41 million has been raised for Saskatchewan children undergoing treatment to date – including a record-breaking $1,158,113 last year.  

Counting down to Christmas with a Reverse Advent Calendar in Watrous

Advent calendars are typically used to count down the days of Christmas with a gift each day.  

Watrous is taking the opposite approach to help their local food bank by issuing a friendly challenge to the community. 

Instead of receiving a gift, residents are asked to collect a different item each day to fill up a donation box.  

Memorial in Winnipeg on Sunday for judge, senator, TRC chair Murray Sinclair

A public memorial honouring former judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into residential schools, Murray Sinclair, is set to take place in Winnipeg on Sunday. 

The event, which is being organized by the federal and Manitoba governments, will be at Canada Life Centre, home of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets.

Sinclair died Monday in a Winnipeg hospital at the age of 73. 

Altona Public Works makes headway on Fall projects before snow arrives

Altona's Public Works department has been hard at work getting ready for winter. The warm and relatively dry Fall has allowed for a significant amount of work to get done before the first flakes fly.

"They’re completing the final street sweeping, cleaning storm drains, and ensuring snow-clearing equipment is ready to go," explained Mayor Harv Schroeder. "A couple of recent projects you may have noticed are a layer of gravel has been added to the new section of the cemetery, and road raising work has been done on 9th Street NW to reduce flooding risks."

Curling club looking for volunteers for Men's Provincial Curling Championship

The Viterra Men's Provincial Curling Championship is reaching a major milestone when the championship comes to Stride Place in early 2025. It will be 100 years that the tournament has been around, and Dean Moxham shares why that's a big deal.

"We're the first province in Canada to reach 100 years of men's provincial championships," Moxham notes. "We've always been at the forefront of winning national championships, and there's a strong community background for curling here."

Moxham adds that there could be a tough group trying to reach the provincial championship.

COPP volunteers hit the streets of Carman and Dufferin

It's been about a month since a group of volunteers hit the streets of Carman and the R.M. of Dufferin, acting as an extra set of eyes and ears for the local RCMP. 

Following a recruitment drive this summer, 9 people were selected to help get the newly minted Carman-Dufferin Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) off the ground and, according to Monica Halbesma, Carman-Dufferin Fire Department's public education safety coordinator, it's been so far, so good. 

Obby Khan committed to rebuild, return PC party to its grassroots

Obby Khan says now is a great opportunity to deliver his positive and respectful leadership style.

Khan is one of two candidates vying to become the next leader of Manitoba's Progressive Conservative party.

"For months, I've been attending gatherings - small and large - and that really helped me make the jump to doing this," he said. "Listening to people over and over again, the common theme (that) came up was, 'build a really strong team, Obby. Show respect, listen, build each other up'."

Portage wins second 5-Bloom rating in a row in Communities in Bloom

Communities in Bloom has awarded Portage la Prairie a five-bloom rating—the highest possible—for the second year in a row.

City Councillor Terrie Porter attended the gathering of judges around late July and early August and was present at the Communities in Bloom conference a few weeks ago.
